Breaking News: Bomb Blast in Jalingo,Taraba State

OMG Nigeria gathered that an explosion has struck near government buildings in Nigeria’s Taraba state, causing injuries.

Part of Finance ministry was blown off. Three police officers reported to have died and many injuries.

The blast happened today (Monday) morning at a road junction near the offices of the Taraba state governor. A report from the Nigerian Red Cross said some people were hurt in the blast and taken to nearby hospitals.

Police declined to immediately comment as officers surrounded the road junction.

Nigeria’s largely quiet Taraba state borders Cameroon. Jalingo is the state capital.

it would be recalled that, Bomb and gun attacks occured yesterday (Sunday) on Christians attending church services in Nigeria’s north killed at least 21 people

Five Killed in Jalingo Bomb Blast, Bomb Scare in Yola

At least five people have been killed in a bomb attack on a police convoy in Jalingo, capital of Taraba State, police say.

"A bomber on a motorcycle rammed into the police rider [motorcycle escort]," a police spokesman said.

The attack in the normally quiet town of Jalingo comes a day after at least 20 people were killed at churches in Kano and Maiduguri, reports the BBC.

No group has said it carried out the bombings but militant group Boko Haram has staged many such attacks.

It has carried out several suicide bombings across the northern part of the country, where it wants to establish Sharia law.

Some reports say Taraba State Police Commissioner, Mamman Sule was targeted in the Jalingo attack.

Witnesses say Sule survived the attack but that the huge explosion ripped through a nearby market and the local finance ministry offices, the AP news agency reports.

Meanwhile, there was pandemonium in Yola Monday after people scampered for their lives following a bomb scare in the Adamawa State capital.

The incident happened at about 8.30 am when a Honda Accord car was noticed parked in an area adjacent to the state police headquarters.

The car attracted the attention of a patrol team of the joint internal security outfit, who immediately condoned off the area diverting both vehicular and human traffic away from the busy route for over three hours.

It was the sight of the patrol team at the site of the Honda car that prompted people around the scene to flee for their lives fearing a possible explosion.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesman, ASP Nemuel Yoila, however, said nothing dangerous was found when the bomb disposal squad arrived.

"They (bomb disposal squad) only discovered that it was an empty car parked by the roadside."

Nigeria: BUK - How Gunmen Killed Two Profs, Five Doctors, 19 Others

Gunmen who stormed an early morning Christian worship service in Bayero University Kano, BUK, yesterday, killing two professors, five academic doctors and 9 others came fully armed with improvised explosive devices, (IEDs), and AK-47 rifles.

An eyewitness, who said he narrowly escaped death in the hands of the killers, said the attackers came with the aim to wipe out every member of the congregation. He said that after the attackers had thrown the explosive devices inside the church, they opened fire on the church members who attempted to escape.

There are conflicting reports as to the exact number of professors that were killed. One account mentioned three. But Reuters, BBC, VOA and other news mediums mentioned two. The university spokesman, Alhaji Mustapha Zahradeen, was however categorical that only Professor Andrew Leo was killed. Informed sources have however informed LEADERSHIP that among the dead were Dr. Sylvester Ada of Information Science department. Other victims include four doctors as well as post-graduate and undergraduate students of the university and other church faithful.

The eyewitness said the gunmen, numbering about 20, came in motorcycles popularly called achaba and attacked the faithful while they were holding a service at 8.45am in a lecture theatre at the old site of the university.

The witness disclosed that members of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) later arrived at the scene of the attack and engaged the attackers in a gun battle. It was not clear whether any of the assailants was killed or arrested.

Another eyewitness claimed that no fewer than 20 people died in the attack. He said that the bandits came in a motorcycle and first lobbed two hand grenades inside the sports complex prayer venue then targeted the members of the congregation who were scampering for safety.

JTF spokesman Lt Ikedichi Iweha said military operatives were deployed to the area to restore order. He, however, refused to give details of the attack.

Although the university spokesman told our correspondent that the actual casualties were seven, an eyewitness said he saw rescue operators evacuate 18 corpses.

Zahradeen, who said the school authority had recently outsourced an external security outfit to complement that of the school, explained that the gunmen who stormed the university premises on motorcycles took everybody unawares. He said that it never occurred to them that such an attack could happen.

The spokesman further disclosed that many students and other worshippers were critically injured and rushed to the Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital where there was heavy presence of security personnel.

Iweha, who described the attackers as highly sophisticated, said before his men arrived at the scene the gunmen had fled, as the entire area including Dorayi, Karshen Wire, and BUK Road was cordoned off. He said the measure was part of the security strategy to get at the suspects.

The police in Kano have also confirmed that seven people died and many others injured in the Sunday bomb attack on worshippers at Bayero University, Kano.

The police public relations officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, said the injured were taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Police, SSS caught unawares

However, sources inside the State Security Service (SSS) and the Police Force headquarters have said that the attack in the Bayero University church took the operatives by surprise. According to the official who pleaded anonymity, the security outfits were still trying to grapple with the last Thursday bombing of ThisDay offices in Abuja and Kaduna when they got information of the current attack.

"We have still not come over the ThisDay attack in Kaduna and Abuja when this new one happened. In fact, the top hierarchy of the security apparatuses was still in a shock as to how the Boko Haram sect infiltrated the security network in the FCT with their bombs to wreck their havoc in ThisDay and so nobody knew where their next attack would be.

LEADERSHIP attempts to get reactions from the SSS spokesperson, Ms Marilyn Ogar, failed as she did not pick her calls.

However, NEMA officials who reacted through a text message said that their attention was drawn to explosions and gunshots at the old site of BUK campus in Kano, shortly after the incident, but said since they had no office in the state they had to mobilise response agencies and volunteers to the scene.

In the same vein, another official of the response agencies who preferred anonymity told our correspondent that the people that died were up to 17, but security agents had refused to allow free movement to the area.

The volunteer team noted further that they got to the place immediately the incident happened along with the Red Cross officials and other vital quick-response agencies, but the security operatives refused to allow them to go close to the area.

At the Mallam Aminu Kano Hospital and Murtala Muhammed Hospital where the remains of some of the dead as well as the injured were taken to, journalists and other civil society groups were denied entry.

Attack has breached peace - Kwankwaso

Kano State governor Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso has described the attack on Christian worshipers yesterday, at the old campus of BUK, as an unfortunate and sad incident. He said that the incident had breached the peace that had been gradually returning to the commercial city after the January 20 attacks.

Governor Kwankwaso assured that both the state and the federal governments will continue to work hard to ensure prevalence of peace and harmony among residents of the state, adding that the state government has made arrangements with public and private hospitals in the state to ensure that victims of such incidents are treated satisfactorily.

Governor Kwankwaso, who lamented the loss of lives and property as a result of the attack on the Christian faithful, commiserated with the university authorities and its community over the tragedy and hoped that it will not recur.

The deputy vice chancellor (academic), Prof. Yahuza Bello, who conducted the governor round, explained that some of the worshippers were attacked in an indoor sports hall at the old campus of the university, which they use temporarily as a place of worship.

Prof. Yahuza added that the second group of worshippers was attacked while conducting the Sunday service in an open space outside the Dandatti Abdulkadir Theatre, which they hitherto used but which was currently undergoing renovation.

Gunmen kill Pastor, 2 other worshippers in Maiduguri

Meanwhile, gunmen yesterday shot dead a cleric, Rev. Albert Naga of Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN), and two other Christian worshippers during a church service in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Spokesman of the Borno Police Command ASP Samuel Tizhe confirmed the killings during a telephone interview with journalists in Maiduguri yesterday.

He said, " The reverend and two other worshippers were killed inside the church when the reverend went to administer Holy Communion to worshippers at the church today (yesterday).

"We got information that some gunmen came in a Volkswagen Golf car and shot at COCIN worshippers while they were about to receive the Holy Communion in the church. The church premises have been cordoned off and no arrest has been made yet."

I never liked talent shows': Will.i.am makes bizarre confession on The Voice as he's accused of being rude for tweeting on air

There are certain things that are expected of a judge on a major television talent show.
One imagines that actually liking the kind of entertainment being provided would be a high priority.
However The Voice judge Will.i.am raised eyebrows during tonight's elimination show when he admitted 'I never really liked talent shows' - as well as tweeting during the crucial eviction hour.

He qualified the remark by adding that The Voice was 'different', but didn't explain in any detail how.
Perhaps realising the gravity of what he said, he quickly got back on topic, turning his attention to the two acts whose fates were in his hands.

Will continued: 'This is like the hardest thing, right, because both of you guys are amazing talents.'
'Sophie, you're special. You've learned so much in two months, in two months. It took me freakin' 10 years to learn what you learned in two months. But somebody has to go home.'
It would appear that Will.i.am is keen to come across as having a more 'organic' approach than the other judges.
He said at the beginning of the show that he had no idea who he might potentially send home, as he preferred to keep an open mind.
'I like to experience the performances as the audience does,' he said.
And despite the gravity of the life-changing decision for his contestants - and an audience of nearly ten million - you’d expect Will to be paying a little attention.

But, clearly, the lure of his BlackBerry was too great.
So while the BBC1 show’s other judges discussed contestant Jaz Ellington’s performance, Will busied himself on Twitter.
Viewers criticised him after he was filmed several times on his mobile, with one user saying: ‘It looks like your bored.’
Another added: ‘Using your phone during Jaz came across as incredibly rude!’
But he tweeted: ‘If you saw me on my phone I wasn't being rude... I was connecting to people watching.
'tv, phone, laptop, & tablet.. its a new day...if I dont tweet during live tv Im not connecting to people watching in the new way #thevoiceuk.'
Show sources said bosses may now tell him to stop using his phone on air.
Tom Jones' first reject, 20-year-old Sam Buttery, defended Will adding: ‘He should be able to use his phone. It’s an interactive show and it should be about involving the public.’

Rampant Chelsea maul QPR 6-1

Fernando Torres hit his first Chelsea hat-trick as the Blues stepped up their bid for a top four finish with a 6-1 demolition of west London rivals QPR featuring Super Eagles Taye Taiwo on Sunday.

Torres has endured a mostly miserable 15 months since his British record £50 million move from Liverpool, but the Spanish striker looks revitalised after his crucial late goal in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final triumph against Barcelona.

He was far too hot for QPR’s statuesque defenders to handle and scored twice in the first half and once after the break to seal his first treble since September 2009, when he scored three for Liverpool against Hull.

Early strikes from Daniel Sturridge and John Terry had set the tone as the Blues destroyed QPR with four goals in the first 25 minutes at Stamford Bridge and Florent Malouda completed their biggest Premier League win of the season.

With the FA Cup final against Liverpool on Saturday and the Champions League final against Bayern Munich next month, Chelsea are eyeing a glorious end to a difficult season.

In contrast, QPR, who netted late on through Djibril Cisse, are above the relegation zone only on goal difference

The match had started without the traditional pre-match handshake, which was scrapped to avoid affecting Terry’s upcoming trial over charges of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

But Sturridge, one of six changes made by interim boss Roberto Di Matteo, quickly got the focus back on football.

Just 45 seconds after kick off, Sturridge opened the scoring with a ferocious strike from the left edge of the penalty area that flashed past Paddy Kenny at his near post.

Confidence was clearly surging through Chelsea after the epic win at the Camp Nou and Frank Lampard went close to increasing the lead when his delicate chip forced Kenny to tip over.

That was only a temporary escape for QPR as Terry got the second goal from the resulting corner, the Chelsea captain out-muscling Clint Hill to reach Juan Mata’s corner and direct a downwards header past Kenny from close-range.

Two Profs, many others killed in church blast

KANO —TWENTY persons were killed yesterday, including two university professors with several others injured when gunmen armed with bombs attacked St Stephen Catholic Chaplain, Bayero University, Kano.

The attack occurred at Theatre Two, near Sports Complex, at the old Campus of the institution as Christian worshippers were holding Sunday services. Vanguard gathered that two professors, one identified as Prof. Ayodele of the Chemistry Department and Andrew Leo of the Library Department, were among the dead. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Zaharadeen, confirmed the death of the professors.

An eye witness told Vanguard that the attackers who were armed with Improvised Explosive Devices arrived the Theatre hall of the university at about 8.45a m in a car and two motorcycles and took positions at all the exit points after which they threw the bomb devices into the hall. When the bombs exploded, it caused stampede and when the worshippers attempted to escape from the hall, the gunmen who had positioned themselves at exit points opened fire on them.

According to one witness, “they first attacked the open-air service outside the faculty of medicine. They threw in explosives and fired shots, causing a stampede among worshippers. They now pursued them, shooting them with guns. They also attacked another service at the sporting complex.”

A witness who said he was at the sporting complex at the time of the attack reported hearing gunshots outside while they were praying. “Then there was pandemonium,” he said, adding that he later saw two men outside shooting indiscriminately.

The source explained that scores of others including women and children were injured and taken to hospitals for medical attention.

Musical instruments and half-eaten meals could be seen at the site of one of the services.

A crowd later gathered at a Kano hospital waiting to hear news about friends or family.

A member of the rescue team who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard that, “we have recovered 18 dead bodies so far and have transfered same to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.”

At the time of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

JTF spokesman, Lt Ikediche Iweha confirmed the incident but referred Vanguard to confirm the casualty figures from the university authority. The JTF spokesman, said military operatives had been deployed to the area to restore order. Iweha, however, refused to give further details, saying: “I can’t give you in details of what happened as our people are now at the scene of the incident.”

When contacted, BUK Public Relations Officer, Malam Zaharadeen said: “JTF has taken over the process and we will give you details as soon as they hand over.”

On his part, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Kano Chapter, Rev Ransom Bello while confirming the incident expressed fear that dozens might have been affected.

According to Rev Bello, “the Commissioner of Police has put me on notice about the ugly incident in BUK old campus but yet to confirm the casualty figure”.

Rev Bello stated that “it was morning mass and I have this feeling that dozens might have been affected but we are waiting for final figure from the security forces.”

Nigerians react to Kano bomb blast

Meantime, the Coordinator, Patriotic Alliance of Nigeria (PAN), Chief Maxi Okwu, has advised the Federal Government not to negotiate with any armed sect. Okwu, whose organisation comprised members of opposition political parties, made the call yesterday in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while reacting to Sunday’s bomb attack in Kano.

“Globally, nations no longer negotiate with terrorists. The hammer must fall heavily on the sect and especially their political sponsors whose sole aim is to destabilise the nation.

“These bomb attacks have gone out of hand and the sect has continued to thrive because of their sponsors,“ Okwu said.

Mr Tony Uranta, the Executive Secretary of the United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS), said that the Federal Government should abandon any planned negotiations with the sect.

“We demand that the Federal Government must cease every move toward holding talks with these monsters unless and until they abandon this callously inhumane modus operandi that has claimed thousands of innocent lives.

“There is no justification for the existence of the sect. Enough is enough as Nigeria belongs to all,“ he said.

The President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AlhajiYerimma Shetima, said, “the perpetrators and their sponsors must be traced and brought to book.“

It is sad and unfortunate —Gov Kwankwaso

Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who cut short his official visit to Abuja on Sunday and visited the venue of the attack described it as sad and unfortunate. He was conducted round by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Professor Yahuza Bello and said “this is sad and unfortunate against the backdrop that the attack is coming at a point peace is gradually returning to the commercial city”.

The governor announced that the state government will be responsible for the medical bills of those injured and receiving treatment at the hospital, adding that a notice to this effect has been served to all Chief Medical Directors of existing private and public health institutions in the state.

Kwankwaso who commiserated with the university community assured that his administration will exploit available option to forestall a re-occurrence.

In a speech earlier, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Yahuza Bello explained that some worshippers were attacked at an indoor sports hall, while another set of worshippers were attacked in an open space outside Dandatti Abdulqadir Hall which is currently undergoing renovation.

Men No Longer Run After Me

Nollywood actress, singer and motivational speaker, Stella Damasus, in this interview with P.M. Entertainment spoke about her career, pet projects and death of prominent entertainers in the country Stella Damasus You have been extremely busy lately; tell us what you have been doing? I have been doing a lot of things really. My students at the Stella Damasus Arts Foundation will resume in about three weeks, so I am planning for their induction and also co-ordinating the project’s facilitators. We just concluded the Action Cut series film project in Abuja so the next stop is in Aba which will come up in May. We are currently sketching the designs for my clothing line, SDA Collections, and they are looking great. I am so excited about that. Index Two Studios is about to start filming its short film, so since I am one of the producers, I am trying to make sure everything is in place for a smooth shoot. We are filming in Abuja so it’s going to be extremely worth it. We are editing our movie, Unspoken, that we shot in Cameroon. SDA Productions and Index Two Studios are working together to produce a series of documentaries. There are other things that are coming up but I can’t talk about them now till everything is signed. I am preparing for my trip to the UK for the Women4Africa Awards ceremony because I am one of the three ambassadors they appointed recently. I have also been working in the studio, trying to fine-tune some of my songs. Project Alert is planning something soon and we are working on a huge documentary for that as well. I am going to be filming in Ghana for a movie and also a comedy series in Lagos. Wow! My hands are so full and I pray it translates to money… (laughs). You seem to be very passionate about affecting lives positively. What is the motivating factor? That is what life is about. I have discovered what my purpose is and I am who I am today because God was preparing me for the work ahead. I am here to help people and touch their lives positively. I know that God loves me and is passionate about me. He also loves His children and if I help His children, I can at least put a smile on His face. I remember the verse in the Bible that says: “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me.” As a columnist with P.M.NEWS, what can you say about the platform and your experience so far? It’s been so overwhelming I must say. I have been so encouraged because people are reading the articles and commenting. For the first time, I feel like I have a voice that can be heard, I feel I can express myself more and let people experience things through me. P.M.NEWS has given me the opportunity to reach out and talk to so many people at the same time. I am so grateful for that. I have discovered another side of me that I did not take seriously before. I intend to do more things with P.M.NEWS, so in the nearest future it will be unveiled. Your column with P.M.NEWS is quite motivating and inspiring; do we see you publishing a motivational book soon? Hmm, with the help of P.M.NEWS and TheNews, I am hoping it will work out because I will really love to motivate people through my writings. You earlier announced your intention to contest the post of Public Relations Officer in AGN’s forthcoming election but we recently heard that you have stepped down. Is that true? Yes. It is true I stepped down. I honestly wanted to serve my guild which has done so much to contribute to who I am today. I felt that there were things that we were not getting right in terms of our image and our relationship with corporate Nigeria and the government. I realised that we did not have any form of insurance, pension funds for aging artistes who have served the industry. I saw that even getting loans from banks was impossible because we did not have regular incomes. I noticed that we did not have access to some funds and associations all over the world, I saw that we were not doing collaborations with the right people because of the way we have been packaging ourselves. A lot of artistes still don’t have managers, lawyers and financial advisers etc. All these were reasons I wanted to try and do my best to contribute to the growth of my guild but the only major issue I faced was the fact that I am not a politician. I do not know how to play politics and when it started to get funny I realised that I did not have to be in power to help my guild. I am already training a lot of members for free. At least I can start from there. The Nigerian entertainment sector has recently been rocked by sickness and deaths of prominent members. Do you think this is a natural occurrence? I really don’t know what is going on but one thing I know is that we do not have the habit of going for medical checkup until we fall sick. We work and work until our bodies shut down. Most of us are not on daily vitamins. Another important thing is the fact that it is sometimes impossible to save money, especially among the older artistes who don’t get jobs regularly like the younger ones, and they most likely don’t have insurance or hospital retainerships. Also, we take ourselves for granted because these diseases don’t degenerate overnight; they get worse because there is no early detection. Lastly also, we need to be more prayerful because things are happening that we cannot explain. For sometime now, you have not been regular on screen. What happened? I have done three movies that are yet to hit the market. I did Behind Close Doors Parts 3 and 4. I shot the movie about three years ago. I don’t know why it has not been released into the market. I also did Bent Arrows, a Lancelot Imasuen production which is yet to be released too. And recently, I did Two Brides and a Baby which was produced by Blessing Effiong. The premiere has been done at the cinemas. The most important thing, it’s not flooding movies with my face that would make me a better person. Recently, I went back to school to study acting; that is in the UK. In fact, I am actually going back there very soon. I want to improve on my acting skill and my diction. I must continue to avail myself of the opportunity of being re-trained. Recently, my production company did a 13-episode TV Show called Changing Life showing on AIT, OSTV, UK and Ghana. Soon, we will begin to air it in Canada. Right now, I will soon start shooting the second part of the show as well. Mind you, I need time to stay with my children. I want to be part of their growing up. I take out a few months in a year, do the things I need to do, and go back to tender my children. I try not to expose them to the public, until they have come of age and decide what to do with their lives. Whether they want to become stars like their mum, it is left to them. Paying attention to my kids is very important to me. That is why I’m not so particular about featuring in movies nowadays.

Do all these projects in your hands suggest that your music career is suffering? Not really. My music is not suffering. I’m not a recording artiste, but I own a band and I still do my live performances. I don’t go to night clubs to perform; instead I perform at weddings, product launching, naming ceremonies and all that. You might see me on screen doing music, because I’m concentrating on my band now. For the past one year, I have been working on my songs, trying to arrange them well because after over 15 years in the industry, my fans are expecting something good from me. I have to be careful not to come out with something that will not meet their expectations. Before the end of the year and by God’s grace I will drop two singles.

When you look back, what would you say may have gone right or wrong in your acting career? I don’t regret things I have done or gone through. They are all part of my working experiences. I like the pace at which my career has gone. And if after 17 years of being in an industry and I’m still so relevant that people still believe in me and want me to endorse their products, then, it means that God dictates my pace. I can’t run faster than my legs can take me. Since I surrendered myself and my career to God, He’s been able to order my steps. I’m not allowed to be everywhere. I’m only at places where I have to attend. I don’t have any regrets at all. I’m happy the way my career has turned out. I’m happy with the pace at which I’m going.

Over the years, how have you been able to cope with the temptations and criticisms associated with acting? If you had asked me this question 10 years ago, I would have answered it. But after more than 17 years in the industry, I don’t bother anymore. They call me old layer now, since I’m not among the hottest and freshest actresses around. They have those they run after now. I’ve been able to maintain a certain standard. With God on my side, things have been working well for me and my children. So, I don’t succumb to male advances because of money or fame. The small fame that God has given to me, I’m contented with it.

How is your present love life? I love Jesus. I’m in love with Jesus and He loves me more than anything else in this world. I’m happy.

You were a year older on Tuesday, Any regrets? Honestly, I have no regrets at all. As I said earlier, God has been in charge of my life and career. So, I have no regrets. I will rather be thankful to God for bringing me this far. Many positive things have happened in my life recently and I feel so honoured.

A United States of America-based fashion manufacturing outfit, AmVictorious, recently unveiled you as their brand ambassador in Africa. How do you feel about it? I am really excited and I looked forward to it. I’m humbled, knowing that there are a million and one other celebrities out there, who are more popular than I am; celebrities who are doing bigger and greater things internationally than I am. So, for the company to choose me over these celebrities not just for Nigeria but for the whole of Africa, means that I should continue doing the positive things that I have been doing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Friday April 27, 2012 secured a landmark victory in its suit against former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, when the panel of three justices led by Justice Ejembi Eko, struck out the appeal by the former governor and his company Slok Nigeria. The appellants had approached the appellate court to set aside the ruling of the Federal High Court that the former governor had a case to answer. Some of issues raised for determination by Kalu’s counsel, Awa Kalu (SAN) included the declaration by the appeal court that the appellants were arraigned on non-existent law and that the proof of evidence did not disclose a prima facie case against the appellants. Orji further stated that since the Abia State High Court had issued an ex-parte motion on the matter, the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case. He also sought the leave of the appellate court to enforce his fundamental human rights by declaring his arrest, detention, and arraignment a nullity. Orji’s company, Slok Nigeria Ltd sought similar leave. Additionally that the appeal court should determine whether the EFCC and the federal government were competent to prosecute a case involving the revenue of a state. In a unanimous ruling read by Justice Eko on behalf of Justices Kayode Bada and Regina Nwodo, the appellate court resolved all the grounds of appeal in favour of the respondent and dismissed the appeal for lack of merit. Justice Eko noted that the proof of evidence attached to the 97 count charge preferred against the appellants by the EFCC disclosed a prima facie case against the former governor and others. According to him, the facts raised in the proof of evidence established a prima facie case against the appellants. He further said that as far as there is a link which prima facie is all about, the appellants had an obligation to stand trial to defend themselves.

Culled from Sahara Reporters He further ruled that the ex-parte order of May 31, 2007 by Abia State High Court, asking the Federal High Court to stay all proceedings against Orji was a racquet suit aimed at frustrating his arrest and subsequent prosecution. “That order was an order at large, personal rather than definite. It was an order made as an ex-parte and not at the course of trial.” He described the ex-parte motion as an abuse of court process. Justice Eko affirmed that the claim of breach of personal freedom by Orji was sentimental in nature. ”This claim borders on the realm of conspiracy theory and is politically motivated. Right to personal liberty is not absolute,” the judge stated. On whether EFCC had the competence to charge the appellants, the court maintained that both the EFCC Establishment Act and the Money laundering and Prohibition Act, (MPLA, 2003, 2004) had given the commission power to prosecute offenders. “EFCC derives its competence to prosecute from section 6 and 7 of its Establishing Act. Equally, the definition of economic crime is quite wide,” the judge said. In his reaction to the ruling, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs expressed satisfaction with the judgment. He noted that the Appeal Court ruling had vindicated his position that the Abia High Court Order was intended to protect Kalu from prosecution and exposed the hollowness of the position of the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Andoakaa that the order must be obeyed. The EFCC had on July 27, 2007 arraigned former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu before an Abuja High court on a 107 count charge of money laundering, official corruption and criminal diversion of public funds totaling over five billion. On August 5,2007 Kalu wrote a letter to then President Umaru Yar'Adua, urging him to order the EFCC to discontinue the trial, complaining that the Commission failed to obey a May 31, 2007 Abia State High Court order for stay of proceedings pending the determination of a motion before it. President Yar'Adua, replying through Aondoaaka, promised Kalu that the Abia High Court ruling would be respected. On September 3, 2007 Kalu filed a motion at the Abuja High Court asking for an order to strike out all EFCC charges against him and to vacate the terms and conditions of the bail earlier granted by the court. During the September 5, 2007 hearing of Kalu's motion, an attorney from the AGF’s office appearing for Aondoakaa, urged the court to comply with the Abia High Court ruling. Earlier, both the EFCC lawyer and the Justice Minister's representative clashed over which of them had the power to prosecute Kalu's case. The matter was resolved in favour of the Attorney General. During the course of the trial, one chief Eze Gaius Ihejiamaizu, who was then the chairman of Abia council of Ezes stood as one of Kalu’s sureties but eventually withdrew his surety. He said in his application to be discharged from the obligation that he no longer have confidence in the 1st accused person and will not stand as surety for him anymore. “That for now, the 1st accused and myself have not been associating with each other and I can no longer vouch for him being unaware of his movements and action. “That it would be in the interest of justice to discharge me as a surety to the 1st accused person and return my said certificate of recognition to me,” he declared.

I Killed My Girlfriend Over Abortion Money, Man Tells Police

Jim Zaccheus, the 27-year old security guard who allegedly killed his girlfriend, Miss Peace Mathias and buried her corpse in shallow grave in his room at Elechi Beach Waterfront, Mile One, Diobu in Port Harcourt, southsouth Nigeria, said he killed her over abortion money and blamed the devil for his action. Zaccheus was arraigned before Mrs. D.N. Wanjoku, who ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody for lack of jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court to adjudicate on matter. The magistrate said since the court lacked the legal powers to hear the case, the suspect could approach the High Court for bail. She subsequently adjourned the case till 30 May for the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP’s advice on the case. Sources said the suspect had told his interrogators that trouble started when he could not provide an undisclosed amount of money to procure an abortion of her deceased girlfriend’s three-month old pregnancy. According to police sources, Zaccheus allegedly confessed that when he court provide the needed funds for the abortion, his deceased lover decided to procure a loan which he would pay later. However, the suspect reneged on his promise after the abortion was procured successfully by the late girlfriend. But the late lover visited his house at Elechi Beach demand the refund of at least a part of the total money spent on abortion. He allegedly said in his statement to the police that all attempts to persuade his deceased girlfriend to see reason that he was yet to receive his first salary from the security company where he worked fell on deaf ears. He said “a quarrel ensued and it resulted in a brawl which made me push her and she hit her head on the wall of my room and slumped. “When I discovered that she had stopped breathing, I escaped and out of fear, I slept in my friend’s place. “When I came back the next morning, I found out that she was still lifeless. I became confused and decided to dig a shallow grave and bury her and later went back to my friend’s house.” Zaccheus in his statement blamed the devil for his action and pleaded for leniency.

Guardiola quits Barcelona

Barcelona have confirmed that Tito Vilanova will take over as manager from Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. The 42-year-old has been assistant boss at Camp Nou since Guardiola took the top job in 2008, and has helped to guide Barca to 13 trophies in four years. In a press conference on Friday afternoon, club president Sandro Rosell thanked Guardiola for the successes that he has brought the Catalonian side. He told reporters: "Thank you, Pep, for all the happiness you have brought us and for bringing a model of football that can never be questioned." The naming of Vilanova so quickly after the Spaniard's resignation on Friday afternoon was unexpected, with Laurent Blanc, Marcelo Bielsa and Ernesto Valverde among those thought to have been in contention. Guardiola's last match in charge of the Blaugrana will be on May 25, when Barcelona take on Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final. The move to step down as Barca boss occurs mere days after being knocked out the Champions League by the 10 men of Chelsea. Prior to that semi-final second leg, the current La Liga champions were all but eliminated from the top-flight title race by losing 2-1 to Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

Just how many times does one couple need to say I do? Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon pile on the romance to renew their vows for the FOURTH time

They have already renewed their wedding vows three times, but Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon clearly haven't found enough ways to say 'I do.' The famous couple piled on the romance as they renewed their vows for the fourth time in front of the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower.
Mariah, 42, looked stunning in a fishtail white gown with a black sash which hugged her curves. The singer sported a chunky diamond necklace and matching earrings at the Parisian hotel, while her long light brown hair, was tied in a sophisticated half ponytail. And in a rather cheesy touch, husband Nick Cannon, 31, ensured he matched her in a white suit and black tie.
Rather unusually, the couple invited the press to witness their happy occasion at a photocall at the French capital's La Maison Blanche hotel. And Nick and Mariah showed how comfortable they were in front of the cameras, with Nick going down on one knee in a mock proposal. The couple wed at a private resort in the Bahamas on April 30, 2008 and like to celebrate by renewing their vows once a year.

They also mark the birth of their twins Moroccan Scott and Marilyn Monroe on the 30th, although the babies were kept out of sight today. The Precious star tweeted about the upcoming big day during her shopping trip this afternoon, writing: 'Shopping for Roc & Roe's bday in Paris...Dembabies dembabies dembabies!' She last week revealed the Cannon-Carey family will be celebrating big time, tweeting: 'We have put together some very festive plans: ) LYM! Can't wait to see you soon in Paris and Ischgl
Earlier the couple had looked equally lovey-dovey as they strolled around the city together. They shared kisses and held hands as they went shopping and sight-seeing in the City of Light. The diva couldn't resist flaunting the results of her 70 lb weight loss as she strolled around the city.

The Jenny Craig ambassador, whose svelte new figure graces the May cover of Shape magazine, wore a tight-fitting red and black lace belted mini-dress underneath an open black coat. Her ever-present oversized sunglasses rested on her face, while a matching pair of ankle strap heels adorned her feet. Her husband also looked dapper, though far more low-key in a grey turtle-neck sweater underneath his wool coat, and paired his red, black and tan suede trainers to match Mariah's shoes.

Kidnappers kill 16-year old daughter of ex- Anambra lawmaker

IT was a terrible sight at the popular Borromew Hospital roundabout in Onitsha when a five –man suspected kidnap gang shot and killed Chisom, a 16- year old daughter of the former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Anthony Ezechi Nwoye while attempting to kidnap his wife, Mrs. Vero Nwoye, a Pharmacist. Chief Nwoye represented Idemili North in the immediate past House of Assembly. Mrs. Nwoye and her daughter, Chisom, a Senior Secondary, SS11, student of Mercy Girls Secondary School, Umuoji, left her Pharmacy shop located at No 6 Obosi street, Nkpor and were driving home in her Mercedes Benz 190 with registration number BR 439 LSD when the suspected kidnappers blocked their car at the All Hallows Seminary junction beside Zik’s home in Onitsha and pulled her out of her car and dragged her into their own. Apparently realizing that the young lady sitting beside her might live to tell the story, one of the hoodlums turned back and shot her on the chest and she died on the spot. Honourable Nwoye, who narrated the incident to Saturday Vanguard said: “My wife, seeing the condition of her daughter, refused to enter their car as she fell down and sobbed uncontrollably thereby attracting the attention of many people to the scene. Angered by what my wife did, they also shot her on the leg and after about 15 minutes of struggle with the kidnappers, they left her and drove away in their car.” According to him, the kidnappers were armed with AK47 rifles, adding that people watched while the operation went on. He said that her daughter was rushed to a private hospital where she was confirmed dead, adding that he later made a report to the Inland Town Police Station in Onitsha before the police allowed him to carry the body which he deposited at the Borromew Hospital mortuary in Onitsha. The former lawmaker said it was the second time kidnappers attempted to abduct his wife, recalling that on December 27 last year, the hoodlums trailed her as she left her shop and at the same spot, tried to kidnap her, but she jumped out of their vehicle and ran away. Police public relations officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka however told Saturday Vanguard that the incident had not been formally reported to his office.

Thousand workers evacuated amid central London bomb threat after 'man wearing gas canister storms offices and takes hostages'

Armed police have evacuated at least 1,000 workers in central London after a suspected bomber stormed an office building and took hostages. The man, who identified himself as Michael Green, strapped gas canisters to his back before entering the office of an HGV firm on Tottenham Court Road, according to witnesses. He is understood to have taken four hostages inside Shropshire House, amid claims he had failed a HGV training course and wanted his money back. Officers, including explosives experts and police negotiators, sealed off the block as the man begun hurling objects including computers and filing cabinets from a fifth floor window and threatened to blow himself up. Bystanders, some of whom reported hearing shots being fired, have now been pushed back to Euston Road, which is about half a mile from the scene. Witnesses say snipers have also been seen on adjacent buildings.

'The police came in to our reception and told us we had to evacuate the building immediately. 'We have been getting moved further and further back by the police. 'There are all sorts of rumours going around about what is happening. We think it is some sort of recruitment or training agency.'
