DANA Airliner Crash: Lack of Equipment Impedes Rescue Effort And Evacuation of Crash Victims

Accident investigation crews, the police and fire services are part of general search and rescue operations that have been impeded by a variety of factors at the scene of Sunday’s MD 83 airliner crash in Lagos, Nigeria.

With police and emergency services appearing to be helpless, a majority of the victims of the crash are yet to be evacuated. Residents of the area took over the unsecured crash scene despite dangerous gas fumes in the area.

The 22-year old aircraft, operated by Dana Air with 153 passengers on board, crashed at Popoola Street, Iju Ishaga area of Lagos city, reportedly killing atlas 10 people on the ground as well as 153 people on board.

Residents rescued a little girl from a house affected by the crash, but another little girl was reported to have died when she was thrown downstairs by her mother in a burning building.

Apart from the aircrew and the passengers aboard the plane, several people were injured and several houses also destroyed by the crash. Residents told Saharareporters that they were mostly relaxing at home on Sunday watching the soccer match between Nigeria and Namibia at 4.00pm, when the troubled aircraft crashed, catching them unawares.

The baby that died reportedly belonged to a woman who threw her downstairs following the crash as fire enveloped her building. The baby died a few minutes later, as she was said to have landed on her head. The woman herself broke one of her legs as she jumped to escape the fire.

Eyewitnesses who saw the plane struggling to maintain altitude before crashing to the ground said the plane had almost crashed into Longe Private Hospital in the area, but that it suddenly regained some thrust of engine power, only to go on and crash into several buildings three streets away from the hospital.

“We saw it swerving on the roof of Longe Hospital and then we knew something was wrong with the plane. But suddenly it picked up again and went forward until it could no longer pick, then it crashed”, said Mr. Ajadi as he fetched water to help extinguish the fire on the scene.

A new two-storey building bore the brunt of the crash as the aircraft appeared have crashing into it on its belly. The building was vacant at the time of the crash as the inhabitants were away to the church.

A printing press company close to that house was also affected. Copies of freshly-printed textbooks littered the vicinity of the crash site. Visible fractures sustained by the standing wall of the company indicated it might soon collapse.

A female survivor said she could not secure even a needle from her apartment. “Not even a pin, I could not get anything out of my room. It was a neighbor that gave me the [trousers] I’m wearing now”, she said, evidence of the accident obvious all over her body.

Several bodies are yet to be recovered from a building, which was destroyed by the crash. A huge crowd formed around the destroyed building to watch the carcass of the aircraft. The fallen plane, with parts scattered all over the place, sits on the mutilated bodies of the dead passengers, several of them burnt beyond recognition, which are yet to be removed from under the plane.

A search and rescue team member said the operations are impeded because they lack the necessary equipment to move the fuselage of the plane for proper accident investigation. He said a deadly fume oozing out of the crashed plane poses a lot of danger to residents. “We ought to have completely secured the crash scene but we can’t even do it, the residents have taken over.”

IYANYA MISSED THE PLANE CRASH

Few hours after yesterday’s plane crash involving a Dana aircraft McDonnell Douglas (MD-83) at Iju, Lagos, fast rising singer, Iyanya Mbuk has revealed how he missed the flight – thus narrowly escaping death.

The PFWA alumnus said he had no meaningful reason to not have been on the flight. ‘I don’t think I had an authentic reason to stay back in Abuja. I just came up with an excuse that I wanna go to the studio in Abuja‘, the singer wrote on his Twitter page.

He further said, ‘When it’s not your time, It’s not yours. It took me 30 minutes to convince my manager that we should stay back in Abuja. God is great!!!‘

The crash is reported to have claimed the lives of 153 passengers on board, including that of ace broadcaster and NNPC spokesman, Levi Ajunoma, Ehime Aikhomu, son of a former Chief of General Staff of Nigeria and more.

Iyanya’s latest single ‘Kukere‘ is currently gaining more air play on TV and radio stations across the country with his Efik ‘Etighi’ dance step.

Newly wedded Nollywood actress Uche Jombo has returned to country after secretly wedding to Puerto Rican lover Kenny Rodriguez on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

The actress-producer was spotted two days ago as she arrived at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

And hours later, NET spotted her at the Nollywood Movies Awards, in Victoria Island, where she was nominated in the ‘Best Actress’ category for her role in the movie ‘Damage‘. She lost that award to Mercy Johnson.

President Jonathan Declares Three Days of National Mourning For Victims of Dana Plane Crash

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the lives lost in the Dana plane crash in Lagos today.

According to a State House press statement, President Jonathan has cancelled all his public engagements scheduled for tomorrow, and directed that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast for the mourning period. He has also ordered the fullest possible investigation into the crash.

In compliance with the President’s directive, the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah has travelled to Lagos to oversee the crash investigations.

“President Jonathan assures air travellers in the country that every possible effort will be made to ensure that the right lessons are learnt from the tragic loss of valuable lives in today’s plane crash and that further measures will be put in place to boost aviation safety in the country,” the statement said.

It has been a traumatic and tragic 24 hours for Nigeria. In Ghana yesterday, an Allied Air Boeing 727-200 plane from Nigeria crashed at Kotoka Airport; 10 people were reported to have been killed.

This morning in the Yelwan Tudu area of Bauchi, a suicide bomber drove a car into the Harvest Field Church of Christ, leaving 10 dead and at least 40 injured.

Suicide Bomber Blows Up Church In Bauchi

At least ten people have been killed and 40 others were injured today as a suicide bomber drove a bomb-rigged Honda car into a church, Harvest Field Church of Christ. The church is sandwiched between Living Faith church and Deeper Life Church in Yelwan Tudu area of Bauchi metropolis.

An eyewitness told SaharaReporters on phone that the attack has killed several people including the suicide bomber and guards at the church. "We are still carrying out rescue operation and will speak to you later please.”

Other churches in the area hurriedly closed as security operatives arrived the scene.

2014 World Cup: Eagles on redemption flight against Namibia

Before Stephen Okechukwu Keshi mounted the saddle as Super Eagles Chief Coach, the team’s rating in the eyes of ardent Nigerian football followers was nothing to write home about. This was especially after his predecessor, Samson Siasia committed the unforgettable, failing to qualify the team for the 2012 Africa Nations Cup, the first time in 25 years.

Not even the Eagles’ poor performance at the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana which earned them the nickname, Super Chickens, from the Ghanaian press, elicited such dislike from their Nigerian fans like they received after the Syli Nationale of Guinea denied them the 2012 ticket on home soil at the Abuja National Stadium.

It is with this poor rating on his mind that Keshi started a rebuilding process with home-based players and a sprinkle of foreign-based players. This process also gave the fans some hope that all is not lost afterall, especially after the new team posted some respectable results where the locals proved that they were not all brawn and no brain but skillful and determined.

Even in the two friendly matches they lost to Nations Cup record holders, Pharoahs of Egypt and Peru, the home-based lads proved that with more exposures like they are getting already, they could displace some of the former regulars in the team and form the fulcrum of Keshi’s main team.

Though Keshi had not made public his starting line-up as at the time of this report, the home-based players are sure to make up a sizeable percentage of the team to battle the Namibians who are already boasting they will pick a vital point or the maximum points against their supposedly stronger opponents today.

On their way to Calabar aboard a Nigerian airliner, the Namibian coach, Bernhard Kaanjuka would not subscribe to the confidence talk of Wigan goal-getter, Victor Moses that the Eagles will overrun his side. He told Vanguard’s Group Sports Editor, Onochie Anibeze that “You have a bigger team but I can tell you one thing, Nigeria will feel us on the field.We are not afraid of Nigeria. We respect them but will make them feel us on the field.”

In another interview with Sports radio, Brila FM monitored in Lagos, Namibia’s Technical Director, Klaus Starck was not as optimistic as Kaanjuka when he said they were not expecting to qualify for the 2014 World Cup but to put up a respectable performance in the group.

No matter the opposition today, the Eagles must assure their fans that they are on their way to full recovery from the low level they have sunk both in Africa and the world that has made them fall out of the top 10 teams in the continent for the first time and a disgraceful 63rd position in the world, behind the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone, of all teams.

Goal-keeper trainer, Ike Shorumnu has assured that the goalkeepers are in top shape to deny Namibia any chance of getting a goal in Calabar. In the midfield however, with the absence of Chelsea of London hero, John Mikel Obi, Keshi must work on the home-lads who are likely to work with Norway-based Fengor Ogude to ensure they reduce the pressure from the Namibians against the Eagles defence.

As a product of the Clemens Westerhof’s school, Keshi is expected to adopt the wing play from where pacer, Ahmed Musa could float crosses for Victor Moses, Ike Uche or returnee, John Utaka, who are likely to start against the locals, to do the damage.

Keshi himself knows the task at hand and has called on Nigerians, not only to support and pray for the team, but exercise patience with them if the goals don’t come early in the game as they expect. Nigerians like retired Brigadier-General Emmanuel Okaro, Austin Izagbo and former Green Eagles winger, Dr Felix Owolabi have equally called on the fans to be patient with Keshi as he continues the rebuilding process to give them a formidable squad in the nearest future.

WIZKID, TIWA SAVAGE, DAVIDO, BEZ AND ELDEE LEAD NOMINATIONS FOR NEA 2012

The Nominees for the seventh edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Awards has been released. The nominations list was unveiled during a black tie event held at Federal Palace Hotel on Jun 1, 2012.

There are a total of 26 categories which cover both the music and Nollywood industry.

Pop sensation Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun leads the list with six nods. Wiz is followed by Trybe Records boss eLDee, R&B star Tiwa Savage, Jazz-alternative singer Bez, pop singer Davido who all come in with three nods.

A tough category to watch out for is the ‘Best New Act of the Year’ which features Chidinma, Davido, MayD, Bez, BrymO, and Tiwa Savage. All five acts have done pretty well over the last year.

The awards will hold in New York City, on September 2, 2012.

Exactly one week after Funke Akindele’s celebrity wedding, another popular face in the Nigerian entertainment industry is tying the knot.

Today(Yesterday), June 2, 2012, popular dancer Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau and live band drummer Joseph Adakole Ameh are tying the knot at the Bespoke Centre situated at the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

The wedding, which is still going on as at the time of this report, started at 11:30AM, with a short Nikkai ceremony attended by the couple’s parents.

The solemnization was immediately followed with a traditional service at the grand hall of the event centre. The couple stepped out both wearing yellow traditional attire.

The bridal train: Kaffy’s chief bridesmaid is her sister Bimbo Shafau, while Joseph’s best man is Nigerian artiste Lamboginny. Also on the bridal train are singer Waje, rapper Muna and TV personality Yvonne ‘Vixen’ Ekwere. Artistes DIPP, Sound Sultan and El Emcee are also groomsmen.

A white wedding is now taking place which will be followed by a reception. Yes, it a four-combo wedding.

Present at the wedding are family and friends of the couple and a few celebs.

‘WE DON’T KNOW WHO YOU’RE FOOLING’, LEAD CITY STUDENTS RESPOND TO 2SHOTZ

As a follow up to the accusations levelled against rapper 2shotz by Leads City University students, the producers of the show have released pictures and a video footage as evidence.

The materials were released online on Friday, June 1, 2012 three days after 2shotz responded to the allegation levelled against him in a press release issued on May 28, 2012.

2Shotz responded through his manager, one Stephen, saying, ‘It’s been deemed necessary for 2shotz to respond through his publicist, about the stories making rounds that he collected money for a fashion event in Lead City University Ibadan and refused to turn up.

The said amount (N100,000) was meant for 2Shotz appearance at the fashion show. It must be made clear that 2Shotz has a no refund policy of such fee.

Unlike stories going round, 2Shotz was actually in Ibadan for the event but unfortunately, the organizers did not pick him (2Shotz) up at the hotel for the show.

‘I was very angry, that the organizers could bring me to Ibadan, and did not find it necessary to come pick me up at the hotel’ said 2Shotz

2Shotz remains faithful to his fans and will continue to churn out good music that will always keep’, the statement released by his manager Stephen read.

However, a spokesperson for the organisers, Harrison Akadidi says he doesn’t know ‘who the veteran rapper is fooling’. ‘How possible is it, for organizers being unable to pick up 2shotz for an event he was paid to be a part of?’, Harrison asks rhetorically.

He went on to further explain that at 4PM of the event day, vehicles were sent to ‘pick up everyone including 2shotz to the venue of the event’. ‘We needed him to move to a bar in the school so as it create P.R Buzz for the show’.

Harrison says 2shotz refused to go and responded ‘I’m bigger than that sh*t’.

‘At 8PM we expected 2shotz at the event, he wasn’t at the venue knowing there was a vehicle waiting for him. At around 10PM we went on to check up and bring him through, our ‘scamful’ artiste was dead asleep and drunk, he’s P.A said: he is drunk, I’m not sure he can go out this way. For the fact the event was going well without him, the organizers left him’.

‘The following morning he requested for take home ride, we did call a cab for him, later to realize he wanted us to pay for the cab, the cab guy charged 8,000, we gave him 7,000 as all we had left, based on the fact we didn’t sell tickets because the students of Leads City University didn’t believe 2shotz came through for the event.

After giving 2shotz N7,000 he still complained we needed to complete it, that he wasn’t going to complete the money from his wallet, so a student of Leads City and part of the organizing team had a rough shout at him, shortly after then 2shotz left Leads City University.

The pictures released are supposed Blackberry Messenger chats of the rapper with a friend.

The video released on video sharing website YouTube shows a young person screaming at someone supposedly meant to be 2shtoz in a Toyota Camry vehicle. The video however does not show the rapper in it.

Plane Crashes In Lagos

A commercial airliner operated by DANA Air has crashed in the Iju area of Lagos. The aircraft was arriving from Abuja on a local flight when it crashed into a powerline in the area. As at filling this report not less than three buildings have been gutted by fire following the crash.

The airliner has 153 passengers on board.

W/Cup Qualifier With Namibia: Eagles Target Early Goals

Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has told his players to go for early goals when they confront the Brave Warriors of Namibia in Sunday’s Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifying match billed for the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
The former Hawks of Togo coach believes that scoring early goals against the Southern African team will go a long way to unsettle the visitors, as this will open the floodgate of goals in the crucial encounter.

Consecutive losses to Egypt and Peru in recent international friendly games have increased the pressure on Keshi and his team, but the former coach of Mali, who once captained the Eagles, said their target is to get early goals to put the tie away from the Namibians.
According to him: “Well, I have no idea about the Namibians. I am more focused on my team right now to ensure that we play well and also win well. We only know a little about those plying their trades in South Africa and Germany and hope to exploit this knowledge to our advantage, and we would want to score early in the match come Sunday.”

Keshi’s former teammate in the Eagles, Thompson Oliha, has warned him to be very careful in his team’s selection. He called on Keshi to learn from the experience of their former coach, Dutchman Clemence Westerhof. He urged Keshi to avoid experimenting with the team at this point, insisting that the coach should feature the players that are hungry to play for their fatherland.

“Keshi should not get his starting line-up wrong as this may be dangerous,” Oliha, one of the Coaches of Kwara Football Academy, KFA told P.M.News in Ilorin.
Meanwhile, Technical Director of Namibia Football Association, Klaus Staerke, may have conceded defeat to Nigeria, saying it will be a hard task for his team to beat the Eagles.
“The Super Eagles are a big team and it will be very difficult for us to beat them. Nigeria have many experienced players who are playing in Europe. It will be difficult to just overrun a team like that,” said Staerke.

He added: “Namibia are the underdogs in the match, but that does not mean we are here in Nigeria to lose. We are too small to qualify for the World Cup, that’s the reality. We are just trying to build a new team with a set of young players and ofcourse, anything can happen in football.”

Baby born with rare condition that leaves him unable to smile, cry, blink or show any facial expression

There are only 124 children with the condition in Britain, said his parents, Kim Eastwell and Talan James, of Helston, Cornwall.
Miss Eastwell said: 'He is so clever, and he is gorgeous. My heart breaks that I will never see my son smile at me.'

The left-hand side of Cody’s body is also affected.
Mrs Eastwell said that she and her husband panicked when Cody was born because he did not scream or cry.

After a while, they noticed his facial palsy was not improving, he was not supporting himself, or smiling.

She said: 'All I could hear was the other babies crying, I cried myself to sleep that night.'
But it was not until the couple later saw an eye specialist - after being told the problem was nerve damage which would repair itself - that Cody was diagnosed with the incurable syndrome.
Miss Eastwell said: 'Cody doesn’t sit up or crawl but he does roll and has one cheeky personality.

Now Miss Eastwell and Mr James are determined to help other children with Moebius syndrome by raising money for research into the condition.

On Saturday, the Lizard Fundraising Fair near Kynance, Cornwall, will be raising money for the Moebius Syndrome Foundation as well as Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.
