It was not Andy Murray that made history today at the men’s Wimbledon final. It was rather the Swiss meastro, the legend Roger Federer.
He defeated home boy, Murray in four sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4, to equal Pete Sampras record of winning seven Wimbledon titles.
Murray enjoyed an immense home support led by British Prime Minister, David Cameron. But the roaring applause for Murray barely affected the Swiss tennis maestro in the first set, when he appeared to have lost composure.
By the second set, Federer appeared to have gotten his confidence back and put behind him the din of Murray’s supporters, by going on to display a very magnificent, exquisite tennis to down the home boy and once again dash the British hope of having a home-spun winner, 76 years after.
Federer by today’s victory has also become tennis world number one, vaulting over Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. By this feat, he has equalled Sampras and and William Renshaw records as a seven-time champion. He also equals Sampras record for holding number one slot for more than 286 weeks.
The victory also increased Roger Federer’s Grand Slam titles to 17.
The Swiss great has also just the third man over 30 to win Wimbledon following Rod Laver in 1969 and Arthur Ashe in 1975.
