OLYMPICS UPDATE: USA humiliate Nigeria basketball team 156-73

The U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team stayed undefeated in record-setting fashion, getting 37 points from Carmelo Anthony and breaking the Olympic mark for points in a game in a 156-73 rout of Nigeria on Thursday night.

Anthony was 10 of 12 on 3-pointers in surpassing the 31 points scored by Stephon Marbury in 2004. The Americans finished 29 of 46 behind the arc, easily surpassing the 13 3-pointers they made in the 2008 gold-medal game.

Russell Westbrook added 21 points in an awesome performance that saw the Americans make 11 3-pointers in the first quarter, and they were only getting started.

Ike Diogu had 27 points for Nigeria. The Nigerians had said they weren’t intimidated by the Americans, who seem to be sending a message to the rest of the teams in the tournament that they as good as advertised.

Nigerians Condemn Senate President David Mark’s Call To Censor Social Media

According to saharareporters- Nigeria, with a population of nearly 160 million, is one of Africa’s giants when it comes to the use of social media. Nearly 4.6 million Nigerians are on Facebook. Twitter is the 6th most popular website in Nigeria. So it comes as no surprise that Nigerians were angered when the President of the Nigerian Senate David Mark suggested that social media in the country should be censored.

On a Senate Press Corps retreat last week, David Mark said that Nigerians use social media to demean their leaders and that there is no avenue for retraction of criticism.
Mark also added that Nigerian reporters should emulate foreign media “who never report negative things about their countries.”

It may be recalled that Mark, a former communications minister, stated a few years ago that Nigeria’s poor were not ready for telephones.

Alade Aminu scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Ike Diogu added 13 points and 10 rebounds as Nigeria just beat Tunisia 60-56 in the opening game of the Olympic men's basketball tournament.

Al-Farouq Aminu, who played for the NBA New Orleans Hornets last season, added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Nigerians, who have not lost to reigning African champion Tunisia in international competition since 1987.

The two African sides in the London line-up were both making their Olympic debuts in the Group A round-robin contest. The top four teams in each of two groups advance to the medal playoffs.

INSPIRATIONAL:White Collar Jobs Not A Must.

Like many university graduates, after completing his first degree programme, his efforts to get a white collar job were fruitless.
Oneonu Nnamd, 27, a 2008 graduate, is now comfortable as a successful furniture maker in Abuja.
Unlike in public job, he is not only the Managing Director of his outfit, he also doubles as the Chief Executive Officer, the accountant, the cashier and the company secretary.

Today, he sees white collar jobs as waste of time, since he earns more than a university graduate and he is an employer, while contributing to the Nigerian economy, in a way.
“After my service year, I started furniture business with initial capital of N40,000 which was the little money I was able to save but today, I know how much I am counting,” he said joyously.

Nigeria, sixth most dangerous African country

The Global Peace Index ranks countries according to their level of danger, and Nigeria was the 6th most dangerous African country of the 10, the combination of the Boko Haram bombings and related killings in the north, and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) kidnapping and pipeline sabotaging activities in the south have combined to place us in the top 10.

“Since 2007, the Global Peace Index, conducted by the Research Institute of Economics & Peace, class 153 countries of the safest most dangerous. Countries affected by civil wars for years, or face regular violence, are part of the top 10 African countries most dangerous,” reports News of Rwanda.

Yobe Attacked as Death Toll in Kaduna Bombings Climbs to 74

It was time for counting losses Monday, a day after terrorists launched coordinated bomb attacks on three churches in two of the largest cities in Kaduna State—Kaduna and Zaria.

But as residents in Kaduna were coming to terms with the coordinated suicide bomb attacks and reprisals on Sunday, Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, came under gunfire last night by suspected members of Boko Haram. British Airways in Near Mishap at Abuja Airport

Another air disaster was, in the early hours of Saturday , averted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport, Abuja when a British Airways Boeing flight overshot the runway. This happened at a time Nigerians are still smarting from the painful memories of the Dana plane crash in Iju area of Lagos, which killed more than 153 people. THISDAY gathered that there was however no injury to passengers on board the BA flight, which was flying in from the UK.

An official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who spoke to on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident. “It was another near mishap that was averted as the aircraft en route Abuja from UK landed the airport safely though,” he said.

According to him, it was in the course of taxing that the plane exceeded the runway limit because of ongoing construction work at the airport. He expressed delight that there was no damage to the aircraft and no passenger injured.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, the Special Assistant on Media and Public Relation, Mr. Joe Obi, said: “This happened very briefly, and it is as a result of ongoing rehabilitation and upgrade works currently ongoing at the airport which involve lighting upgrade on the landing runway.”

Nigeria down in global ranking of peaceful countries

Nigeria dropped four places to 146th out of 158 countries in the recently released 2012 Global Peace Index, signifying a decline in peace and stability in the country in the past one year.

The index, which is published by the Institute of Economics and Peace, measures peacefulness using 23 indicators, including a nation’s level of military expenditure as a percentage of its Gross Domestic Product, its relations with neighbouring countries, the level of perceived criminality, likelihood of violent demonstrations, level of organised conflict, terrorist acts and the level of respect for human rights.
