The Senate has expressed shock over today’s brutal murder of Senator Gyang Dalyop Dantong in Jos, Plateau State.
As SaharaReporters previously reported, the Senator was killed along with several others, including Gyang Fulani, the majority leader of the Plateau State Assembly, during a mass funeral in the Barakin-Ladi local government area. Simon Davou Mwadkwon of the House of Representatives was reportedly injured and in critical condition.
The funeral was for about 20 people who were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen only yesterday.
In a statement, Senate Spokesman Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe deplored the “unnecessary bloodletting,” which he said suggests that some people no longer respect the sanctity of human life, adding that Nigeria could not afford such killings.
"We cannot continue this way,” said the statement. “The death of Senator Dantong and other innocent citizens is a sad reminder of the current orgy of killings ravaging some parts of the country in recent times.
"The Senate is pained that the killings have assumed a frightening dimension and is worried that a gentle, unassuming and urbane lawmaker in the like of Senator Dantong would die in such a way while serving his people".
While condemning the attacks and wanton killings, the Senate cautioned that it is in the interest of all to rally and put a final stop to the unfortunate incident.
