Star Trek 2012, which kicked off last Friday in Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, at about 9:15PM, recorded a huge success.
The event, which began with a low turnout, ended with the crowd threatening to tear the venue apart, as thousands of youths trooped into the stadium for a glimpse of their favourite entertainers.
Here are some of the titbits from the concert, which had top members of staff of Nigerian Breweries PLC in attendance.
Between Gbenga Adeyinka 1st CFR and DJ Switch
As expected, the indigenous comedian, who has been tagged ‘Shine shine bobo’ for his continuous representation of the Star brand, was the anchor of the Star Trek 2012. He was at his best, and was able to perfect his choice of sounds with the help of star disc jockey, DJ Switch, who did a brilliant job.
Gbenga Adeyinka doles out 5k to dancers
Ibadan youths were blown away at about 10:22pm, when anchor, Gbenga Adeyinka doled out N5,000 to the best dancer of the night. This happened after he chose 7 different youths (male and female) from the crowd to show off their moves to the new dance steps, ‘Azonto’ and ‘Etighi.’ The winner, a young resident, couldn’t contain his joy when Adeyinka gave him the N5,000 for his dancing abilities after he was judged the best by the crowd.
‘Awaiting Stars’ Thrill Crowd
Awaiting stars’ are given the privilege to stage their acts at every Star Trek; and the culture continues this year. Several talented up comers were given the opportunity to gear up the crowd for the main acts. This went on till late in the night when the major performances began at about 11:30pm.
The Crystals Girls
One thing that those behind the stage kept talking about was the dancing prowess of the two female members of Crystals band. The two ladies danced all night, even after the band’s performance. They danced to every song that was played and entertained those behind the stage.
And 9ice Took Over the Stage
At about 1am, traditionally inclined Hip Hop act, 9ice, drove the crowd mad with tunes from his bestselling LPs. He sang for 45 minutes and delivered 7 different songs. His reign on the stage was heart-warming and fun filled, as the man who has been tagged ‘Bashorun Gaa’ by fans, was dubbed one of the 3 kings of the night.
2face Showed Class
Since it was announced that one of Africa’s most decorated and talented music acts, Innocent Ujah Idibia aka 2face would be leading entertainers in this year’s Star Trek, many have been expecting nothing short of sheer fun.
And when the well-travelled musician mounted the stage after 2am, the crowd went ballistic, as several fans rushed to get a good view of the newly wedded pop icon. He dished out several tunes to the delight of the crowd till he bowed out shortly after 3am.
‘No More Siring’ – Tuface
One of the high points of 2face’s performance was when he asked the beautiful ladies in the crowd to come out, but when they were not forthcoming, he reiterated that there would be ‘no more siring, for him as he had had enough. The joke was well received by the crowd.
Obesere Rocked Till the end
At 3:20am, self-acclaimed Paramount ruler of Fuji music, Obesere mounted the stage and sang his heart out to the delight of the crowd, who received him like the son of the soil that he is. He performed till after 4AM, when the event reached its crescendo.
