The marriage of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, one of Hollywood's highest profile relationships and a subject of endless tabloid speculation, is over.

After five years of marriage to Tom Cruise, 'Dawson's Creek' actress Katie Holmes has hired a high-profile legal team to represent her in the couple's split.

Holmes announced through a lawyer Friday that she had filed for divorce from her movie star husband of five years. The news surprised the entertainment industry, which counts Cruise as one of its most recognizable stars, and apparently the actor himself. Cruise learned Holmes had initiated divorced proceedings in New York while he was working on a film set in Iceland.

"Im delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together," Adele wrote.

Konecki is chief executive of a charitable foundation, Drop4Drop, that works to alleviate the global water crisis. He has a daughter from a previous marriage, but this will be the first wee one for Adele.

Nigeria, sixth most dangerous African country

The Global Peace Index ranks countries according to their level of danger, and Nigeria was the 6th most dangerous African country of the 10, the combination of the Boko Haram bombings and related killings in the north, and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) kidnapping and pipeline sabotaging activities in the south have combined to place us in the top 10.

“Since 2007, the Global Peace Index, conducted by the Research Institute of Economics & Peace, class 153 countries of the safest most dangerous. Countries affected by civil wars for years, or face regular violence, are part of the top 10 African countries most dangerous,” reports News of Rwanda.

The ranking evaluates, among other things, the risk of renewed fighting, the resurgence of political instability and terrorist threats. Here is the list of top 10 African countries

The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who made the announcement while releasing the outcome of the recent accreditation of the programmes of the National Open University of Nigeria, (NOUN), lamented that most universities deliberately flouts the existing rules of the operation of part-time courses.

The accreditation exercise, the first since NOUN commenced academic activities in 2003 was held between March 25 and 31 involved nine academic disciplines and 31 programmes, four of which obtained full accreditation status; 26 programmes or 83.9 secured interim accreditation while only one programme or 3.2 percent was denied accreditation.

Sterling Bank Sacks 400 Workers

STERLING Bank Plc has sacked 400 workers in a systematic mass retrenchment aimed at reducing overhead cost. News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, investigations showed that 97 per cent of the retrenched workers were former staff of Equatorial Trust Bank Ltd. acquired by Sterling.
A source close to the bank said that the mass sack, which started about three weeks ago would also affect another 150 workers because of the consolidation of the two banks. He said that workers were thrown into the nation’s saturated labour market with only three months’ salary as severance package.

Yesterday night Prezzo told his right hand man at the moment Keitta that he is done with Goldie for good.The Kenyan rapper was very serious while making it a real point for Keitta to understand that the relationship he has been sharing with Goldie is now a past thing.

He added that “I’m not even eating the food she cooks from now on. I can make eggs. I am done. Watch this space. Fresh explosions rock Kano, Damaturu

KANO— A Series of explosions were reported in Goron Dutse, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State and Sabon Fegi area of Damaturu, capital of Yobe State last night .

The blasts were followed by sporadic gunshots, witnesses said.

Sources said unknown gunmen attacked Dala Police Station close to Sheik Isyaku Rabiu’s residence in Kano.

Some reports indicated that the gunfight spread to Sharada quarters in Kano. Police sources stated that militants were being chased on a highway linking Dala and Sharada area.

Jonathan fires NNPC execs, appoints successors

In what he described as an attempt to “further strengthen the ongoing reforms and transformation of Nigeria’s Petroleum sector, and in furtherance of efforts to achieve greater transparency and accountability in government”, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday night sacked the Austin Oniwon led executive management team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The President, in a statement signed by Reuben Abati announced a new executive management team for the oil corporation which has been in the news of recent over different allegations of corrupt practices.

Thumbs Down for Lagos Varsity Name Change

A federal high court in Lagos, yesterday, granted an interim order restraining the Federal Government from renaming the University of Lagos.

Justice Stephen Adah, ruling in the suits brought against the May 29, 2012 renaming of the institution by the students and alumni of the university asked the litigants to harmonize the suits, just as it adjourned further hearing in the case till July 4.

Part-time programmes in Nigerian Universities suspended

The National Universities Commission has announced the suspension of all part-time programmes run by universities in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Julius Okojie Okojie said the suspension of the part- time programmes was to enable the regulatory body “streamline” them.
He said the work of the universities’ regulatory body was becoming more difficult because of the “products of the system” and urged the institutions to cooperate with the NUC to evolve a more focused and credible system.

Suspected contaminated cooking gas enters Nigerian market

Industry operators have raised an alarm of a large quantity of contaminated or off-specification liquefied petroleum gas, LPG or cooking gas finding its way into the Nigerian market.

The operators suspect that the product may have come in through the borders from Niger Republic, in spite of efforts to beef up security across the borders. The contaminated product is said to contain about 55 per cent propane and 45per cent butane.

In an interview with Vanguard, the Chairman, LPG Group, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. BamboAdemiluyi, said the 55 per cent propane content was very high.

7-day rainfall to hit Lagos soon

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on Saturday said Lagos would soon experience a seven-day rainfall.Mr Abayomi Oyegoke of NIMET Central Forecast Unit, Oshodi, Lagos, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Oyegoke also said hat a total of 570 mm of rainfall had been recorded in Lagos State between January and June.

He explained that the rains being experienced in the state were the beginning of a seven-day rainfall.“In the last one week, it appears we are experiencing a prelude to the normal seven days rainfall and immediately after the seven days rain, what should be the next, is the little dry season.“The dry season indicates the onset of the ‘August break’ and it seems the break may come early this year towards the second or third week in July, this is also normal,” Oyegoke said.

He said the August break signified the first break of the peak of the rainfall over the swamp forest area.Oyegoke said that the announcement by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment that rain would fall for 238 days was misleading.He explained that the 238 days was the duration of all the rainfall in the state.He said that the rainfall in the state this year would be normal and urged residents to keep their surroundings clean to prevent flooding.

Breaking News: Keitta Survives, Barbz Evicted!

It’s been a long day in Upville for all housemates nominated or not. It was also a hard time for Goldie to reveal her replacement and when she called out Keitta‘s name, the Ghanaian looked surprised but kept calm and went upstairs to pack his bags.

Goldie knelt on her knees and begged Barbz for forgiveness because she had no choice as her man Prezzo was also on the nominated list. Barbz hugged her and seemingly accepted her apology.
Well, Big Brother presenter IK called his name and said that he was not leaving Upville meaning that he had survived the chop board.
As for Barbz, unfortunately she was evicted from the StarGame show, thus leaving one South African (Keagan) in the house.

However, alot remains to be uncovered in the coming weeks in the house because Keitta will surely leave no stones unturned especially in his nomination sessions because he now knows that anything and anybody can nominate him.

Breaking News: Goldie Wants To Exit StarGame!

Nigeria’s remaining StarGame rep Goldie wants to quit the game even after her interesting performance in the house so far.
Apparently, the Nigerian lass wants to quit because she feels that she betrayed a few people in the house especially Keitta whom she replaced recently during her swap session.
Goldie spent the rest of the morning in the garden and the bed room sobbing, not even her closest pal and housemate Prezzo would calm her down.

She said that she can’t stand the fact that she has to spill the beans later in the day.
Goldie later asked for Biggie’s attention in the diary room where she could have made a decision to quit. As usual, a housemates is given some time to think about what they are about to do.

In an attempt to convince her change her already made up mind, Prezzo approached her in the bedroom and reminded her of how many people and fans she has behind her and that seeing her out immaturely will definitely not go down well with them.
“Think about your family and the fans you have out there,” Prezzo reminded her. He continued to convince her: “Your all i have….”

Prezzo continued to talk to her about going back to the diary room and cancel all that she had agreed with Biggie, however, she seemed determined to go ahead with her plans.
Well, hope Prezzo succeeds in convincing her other wise because if at all she continues with her plan, she could be leaving immaturely.

Meanwhile, the evictions are on, Keitta and Barbz are up for eviction tonight. All the best for both contestants.

Pastor Chris Okotie Ends Four-Year Marriage With Wifev

Rev Chris Okotie’s second marriage has sadly ended after only four years. The Head Pastor of Household of God announced in church a few hours ago after the last service that he has separated from Stephanie Henshaw whom he married in August 2008.

He told his congregation that he wanted to be the one to break the sad news to them and hoped for their understanding. He also said there was no going back, that the marriage was over!

This is Rev Okotie’s second failed marriage.

Female Talkshow Host Rosie Engaged To Girlfriend!

Oprah Winfrey’s right-hand talk show host and American female television personality- Rosie O Donell- shocked the entertainment world this morning when she announced her engagement to her girlfriend- Michelle Rounds.

It was even more puzzling owing to the fact that Rosie was raised Roman Catholic. She lost her mother to cancer as a pre-teen and has stressed the importance of protecting children and supporting families throughout her career. So it sounded awkward to people who know her roots to believe what they heard this morning.

But many are not shocked as this is in fact the second time Rosie will be embarking on an act that could easily fetch her fourteen years behind bars in Nigeria.

Rosie was married in 2004 to another lady; Kelli Carpenter- a former Nickelodeon marketing executive. On February 26, 2004, the couple were married in San Francisco, two weeks after mayor Gavin Newsmon authorized the granting of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, which was later determined to be invalid under California law.

And in fact Kelli Carpenter still bears Rosie’s surname to this very day.

Rosie revealed during a taping of her show on the Oprah Winfrey Network today that she and girlfriend Michelle Rounds are, indeed, engaged!

The duo have not yet set a wedding date but it does seem likely that they’ll be swapping vows in New York, where same-sex marriage is legal, rather than in Chicago, where O’Donnell tapes her show.

Ghanaian movies banned in Nigeria!

The once harmonious relationship between the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood and its counterpart, Ghana’s Ghollywood,is currently under threat as the movie marketers under the aegis of Film, Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) has placed embargo on Ghanaian films with effect from the end of this month.

The association has also resolved to halt the distribution of films produced by non-professionals. It insists that if such film(s) must be distributed at all, its right of ownership should be transferred to its members on negotiation

The FVPMAN chairman, Onitsha branch, Mr. Uzo Godson Nwosu who confirmed this development to HVP, said this position was taken after the association’s general meeting last weekend in Onitsha.

According to him, the decision became necessary following the position taken by their Ghanaian counterparts who have banned the distribution of Nigerian films in their country long time ago.

His words, “starting from the first week of August, no Ghanaian film will be allowed to enter the Nigerian market again. We have resolved that no Ghanaian film will be distributed within our controlled market. Our Ghanaian counterparts have long stopped distributing our films in their country, and given this development, we have no choice than to reciprocate the gesture.” FVPMAN boss stated.

Boko Haram frees 40 from Yobe Prison

Forty inmates of Yobe Prison were freed in an attack believed to have been carried out by the dreaded Boko Haram Sect, Patrick Egbuniwe, Yobe State police commissioner, said on Sunday.

"There was an attack on the Yobe prison this morning. The Boko Haram sect attacked the prison through the Emir's palace and 40 inmates escaped," he said.

"They attacked with rifles; the police and the joint task force confronted them. The Boko Haram members that were shot were carried away by the sect."

He said two of the attackers were shot dead and some policemen were injured.

Gun battles between sect members and security forces in Yobe's capital Damaturu killed 40 people on Tuesday last week.

Boko Haram has been blamed for several prison breaks in the past and one of the group's few demands has been that its imprisoned members should be freed.

Attacks on churches have intensified this month, sparking deadly religious violence in the northern state of Kaduna.

A lone bomber targeted a popular night club-Kryxtal Lounge- at Wuse 2 on Friday night. Blast destroyed several cars directly opposite the nigth club in Abuja. No injuries recorded.

Four Would-Be Mosque Bombers Arrested In Kano

Four suspected mosque bombers were this afternoon arrested in Kano State, half an hour after they were supposed to have set-off a bomb in a mosque in FageLocal Government. Their bombs, which were concealed in a polythene bag, were defused.

The Kano State Police Command has confirmed that the suspects are in its custody. A source gave the names of the men to SaharaReporters as: MohammedSaidu Lawan, Salisu Adamu, Saminu Haruna, andAbdullahi Mohammed.

The targeted mosque was to have been bombed around 2pm on a day of worship, but luck ran out on the prospective perpetrators at about 1:30p.m.

A source in the Police Anti-bomb unit said the situation created panic as many residents who were trooping-in for prayers decided to pray in other mosques.

The entertainer has covered The Guardian UK’s style publication The Observer Magazine which will be hitting the stands tomorrow Sunday, June 23, 2012.

Bomb Blast Hits Popular Abuja Nightclub

A bomb exploded at the popular Crystal Lounge in the Wuse II district of Abuja. According to eyewitnesses, a man entered a crowded food court, planted the bomb and then ran away. No casualties recorded but five cars were destroyed in the attack.
