Oprah Winfrey’s right-hand talk show host and American female television personality- Rosie O Donell- shocked the entertainment world this morning when she announced her engagement to her girlfriend- Michelle Rounds.
It was even more puzzling owing to the fact that Rosie was raised Roman Catholic. She lost her mother to cancer as a pre-teen and has stressed the importance of protecting children and supporting families throughout her career. So it sounded awkward to people who know her roots to believe what they heard this morning.
But many are not shocked as this is in fact the second time Rosie will be embarking on an act that could easily fetch her fourteen years behind bars in Nigeria.
Rosie was married in 2004 to another lady; Kelli Carpenter- a former Nickelodeon marketing executive. On February 26, 2004, the couple were married in San Francisco, two weeks after mayor Gavin Newsmon authorized the granting of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, which was later determined to be invalid under California law.
And in fact Kelli Carpenter still bears Rosie’s surname to this very day.
Rosie revealed during a taping of her show on the Oprah Winfrey Network today that she and girlfriend Michelle Rounds are, indeed, engaged!
The duo have not yet set a wedding date but it does seem likely that they’ll be swapping vows in New York, where same-sex marriage is legal, rather than in Chicago, where O’Donnell tapes her show.
