UNN student commits suicide this morning.

Photo of the boy who committed suicide

A student from the university sent me a mail about what happened in their school early this morning. The students of University of Nigeria, Nsuka, woke up to find one of their own hanging from a rope in an unfinished Franco building beside the hockey pitch in their school. Roommates of the dead student said he left the room around 2am this morning and they thought he had gone to study, only for his corpse to be found dangling from a rope this morning. He's a 3rd year Physics and Astronomy student in his early 20's. So so sad.

Babcock Set To Graduate 25-year-old Phd Holder

Babcock University (BU), Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, is set to make history in Nigeria by graduating a 25-year-old doctorate degree certificate holder during its forthcoming convocation ceremony slated for Sun-day, June 2.

Revealing this recently was the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Kayode-Makinde, who said he was proud that his university would be achieving this, “particularly at a time Nigeria needs to be in global spotlight for some-thing good.”

The would-be graduate, Opemipo Sodipe, would be awarded the certificate in Information Resources Management. “It is very important to note that the graduates we produce here are total students who combine discipline with academic excellence. So there is no doubt about their competence, because she would not be the first to attain such height.

“I believe many people would want to query what we have done due to the conventional age-limit for entering a university, but I must emphasize that we cannot send back brilliant students who have successfully scaled through the hurdles of our intensive screening exercise.

“We must also consider the condition for enrolling for a postgraduate programme which is good grade at first degree level and other basic requirements".

RIHANNA POSES NUDE AGAIN

American R&B singer Rihanna has launched her new perfume ‘Nude‘ with pictures of her naked body.

The pictures, which recently found their way online, showed the star, with a new blonde hairdo, in different poses and seductive expressions.

The day before the photos leaked, the Def Jam singer uploaded a message on her Instagram saying ‘I got a big shoot tomorrow for a surprise fragrance for my ladies called…NUDE! Bye bye dreadz, for NOW!‘

The perfume is to hit the shelves very soon and was inspired by the success of her previous perfume, Reb’l Fleur, which she launched in 2011.

This isn’t the first time Rihanna has taken risqué photos. She recently posed for a topless shoot handled by Melissa Forde for the June edition of Esquire UK magazine. Who’s complaining?

UNILAG shut; no going back – Jonathan

LAGOS — Authorities of the University of Lagos, yesterday, ordered immediate closure of the university following protests by students of the institution which entered second day over the renaming of the school to Moshood Abiola University. This came as the Federal Government insisted that there was no going back on the decision.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s announcement during his Democracy Day broadcast, Tuesday, renaming University of Lagos sparked off spontaneous protests from the students of the institution.

On the second day of the protests, the students and lecturers arrived the Third Mainland Bridge as early as 7am carrying placards of various inscriptions, conveying a message that they don’t want the new name. They barricaded the bridge and prevented motorists from accessing it as they chanted “We don’t want MAU, give us our UNILAG.”

The protest led to a traffic gridlock in that axis as civil servants whose offices are situated at Victoria Island and Ikoyi were unable to get to their offices at the usual 8am.

Motorists were therefore compelled to make use of Ikorodu Road to CMS which is the only alternative route to the Island, as commuters were forced to pay fare that was fifty per cent higher than the normal.

The protesting students vowed not to vacate the roads until President Jonathan reverts the name of the school to UNILAG.

Unilag already has a 50-yr-old name — ASUU chairman

Speaking on the protest, Dr Karo Ogbineka, UNILAG ASUU Chairman said: “If President Goodluck Jonathan must honour MKO, he could name one of the newly established nine Federal universities after him. UNILAG, already has a name that has been in existence for 50 years.

“All over the world, governments build monuments to honour their heroes. The president could as well change May 29 democracy day to June 12 in honour of MKO”.

At Fadeyi bus-stop the protesters hijacked two BRT buses which were used to barricade the two sides of the road causing serious traffic gridlock that lasted hours as some passengers disembarked and walked, while others had to terminate their journey. The protest caused panic and apprehension among residents of the area as many of them scampered for safety. The situation was almost hijacked by hoodlums but for the timely intervention of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko who arrived the scene and restored sanity in the area. Some motorists who spoke with Vanguard expressed dissatisfaction at the protest and called on government to prevent further occurrence.

In its immediate reaction to the protest, the university authorities in a statement yesterday said: ”In view of the recent developments on our campuses, the senate of the university has directed that all academic activities be suspended forthwith for two weeks. Accordingly, all students are to vacate the halls of residence latest by 11.am today May 30, 2012. The university security has been mandated to ensure compliance”.

No going back—FG

Meanwhile, the Federal Government declared, yesterday, that there was no going back on the decision to rename the University of Lagos as Moshood Abiola University as the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola deserved the honour.

Addressing State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive council meeting, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku said President Goodluck Jonathan’s proclamation was only a response to the over a decade clamour by a broad spectrum of Nigerians for Chief Abiola to be immortalized.

Maku said government does not see the protest as a mark of disapproval and expressed hope that reasons would prevail at the end of the day.

“Yes sometimes government decisions get reactions from the populace, we do not as an administration see this as a disapproval. We just see it as a normal way in every democracy that when you take major decisions definitely sometimes you have public reaction but we should not allow the protest to overshadow the national significance of what Mr. President has done. I think he has shown that he is a true statesman and he truly appreciates the significance of M.K.O’s contribution in the political development of our country and as people who were adults in 1993. We think that this decision has been long overdue and that, today, Abiola can turn in his grave and say this nation for whom I made a supreme sacrifice for political development has recognized my contributions.

“It is our hope that reason will prevail and that the decision to honor one of our nations’s icons and heroes will be appreciated by all Nigerians including our youths and students who are the future leaders of this country.”

According to the minister, “ if there is any figure that symbolizes sacrifice of self for this nation, that figure is Chief M.K.O Abiola who clearly won the June12, 1993 Presidential election and died in that captivity because he stood for principle, he stood to defend the principle of democracy, and for anyone that is familiar with the development of our politics in the last two decades, there is no event in the political history of our country that touches the hearts of quite a significant number of citizens like the June 12 Presidential election.

“In the last two decades, there has been widespread outcry that this democracy has not given Chief M.K.O Abiola and other heroes who passed on in controversial circumstances their due honour as a result of what they did to stand for the democratic development of this country. These outcries have continued to come from citizens spread across the nation. What Mr. President did was to listen to the outpouring of appeals of persuasions by Nigerians across this country that MKO deserved to be immortalised. What he therefore did in his capacity as a visitor to the University of Lagos was to name the University after Moshood Abiola of blessed memory. He did so in the best interest of the country, he did so because any nation that does not honour those who clearly stand out and make a sacrifice as role models for others to follow cannot appeal to the best in its own traditions for citizens to follow. The decision has been made in very good faith by Mr. President and we have seen the reactions by a section of the students of University of Lagos; we have also seen the outpouring of encomiums by patriots and statesmen who really understand the reasons why the President honoured Abiola.”

The information minister said the decision by the Federal government to rename the University of Lagos should “unify Nigeria, those who believe in one country, those who believe in one democracy, those who believe in the reward for sacrifice for the nation and I think that is exactly what the President did.

“I remember that around 1987-88 when one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists and leaders Chief Obafemi Awolowo passed on, the Federal Government renamed the University of Ife as Obafemi Awolowo University. In addition to that also in the course of our history we have had several national institutions named after our past heroes and even living heroes” he said.

What is the truth about IVF and birth defects?

When Marie Storey and her husband Mark were offered help in their desperate bid to have a baby, they admit that they didn’t ask too many questions.
They knew their options were limited and were willing to grab any chance they could.
The couple, from Lincoln, were offered a form of assisted conception called ICSI — intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

This involves a single sperm being surgically injected directly into an egg — usually the only option for men, like Mark, who aren’t producing enough sperm for traditional IVF treatment (where sperm and an egg are mixed together in a petri dish).
‘We didn’t know anything about the procedure when we went for it,’ says Marie, 31.
‘Like many couples, we just thought: “That can work? Great, let’s do it.” ’
When they’d met, Mark, a 40-year-old civil engineer, already had three children from his first marriage and had undergone a vasectomy.

After a reversal operation failed, the couple were told ICSI was their only hope.
The private fertility treatment, which cost about £6,000, began on March 6, 2007.
Excited and hopeful, they had no reason to suspect it might prove risky, and could even be responsible for harming their longed-for baby.
Mark’s sperm were injected into Marie’s eggs, which had been harvested after she took fertility drugs to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs.

Two embryos were implanted and the couple were thrilled when they discovered Marie was pregnant.
‘By mid-April we were told that we were having twins. I cried with excitement,’ says Marie.
It was a magical moment for the couple.
But at 31 weeks, she started to suffer from pre-eclampsia, a potentially life-threatening blood-pressure condition.
A fortnight later, the boys were delivered seven weeks early in an emergency Caesarean section.

At 3lb 14oz, Lloyd was the smaller twin, while Mackenzie weighed only 4lb 14oz.
At four days old, Mackenzie started having feeding difficulties and was diagnosed with a twisted bowel, which required an operation.
But his problems continued.
‘He wouldn’t take enough milk, so he was tube-fed through his nose until he was eight months old,’ says Marie.
And still little Mackenzie failed to thrive.
‘Though he was a really lively baby, crawling and doing everything his brother did, he just wasn’t growing as fast.
‘We tried to wean him at eight months, but he’d take a few mouthfuls of food before giving up. He couldn’t manage any more.’

'When I was given the drug (Clomid), I'd never heard of any potential problems. Now I think that there should be a lot more research done,' said Sam
In short, Mackenzie was a very sick little boy.
When he was about 12 months old, he underwent yet more surgery, this time to insert a tube so he could be fed directly into his stomach, and also to correct a hiatus hernia, where the stomach bulges into the chest wall.

The tube stayed in for three years and it is only now he’s five that Mackenzie’s parents feel he’s out of the woods.
‘He is living a perfectly normal life,’ says Marie.
‘He is getting on well at school, eating really well and putting on weight.’
It’s also only now that they have started to question whether Mackenzie’s problems were a direct result of how he was conceived.

Medical controversy surrounding the potential risks of IVF to babies and mothers has raged for years, focusing particularly on the ICSI procedure.
This intensified following news last week that the Government plans to raise the upper age limit at which women can have IVF treatment on the NHS to 42.
The latest study earlier this month claimed ICSI babies are twice as likely to suffer birth defects.
Some scientists suggest this is because ICSI subverts natural selection, in which only the best, strongest sperm wins the race to fertilise the egg.
This, they fear, could raise the embryo’s risk of congenital defects.
More than 120,000 children in the UK have been born using ICSI since 1992. Just over half of assisted babies are conceived that way in the UK.

While delighted she was able to conceive using this method, Marie says she was never warned of any possible risks to her baby.
‘I remember the doctors mentioning risks to my own health — I had to inject myself with hormones,’ she says.
‘But at no point did they mention any health risks to the baby.
‘The stories about ICSI are worrying.’
Worrying, indeed — and confusing.
It should be pointed out that the vast majority of babies born via ICSI or conventional IVF are perfectly healthy. However, there are growing concerns about the possible risks associated with fertility treatment.
A recent study made shock headlines when it reported that ICSI babies are twice as likely as those conceived naturally or by conventional IVF to suffer birth defects such as cleft palate, heart and lung conditions, cerebral palsy and blood disorders.
Professor Michael Davies, author of the study into 6,100 children born from fertility treatment in South Australia over 16 years, described the ICSI risk as ‘sky high’.
Dr Allan Pacey, a Sheffield University fertility expert, says scientists are concerned over ICSI because it was introduced quickly and with little prior testing.
‘IVF, by comparison, had a lot of animal testing beforehand,’ he says.
‘People have worried about ICSI babies for a while and these children have been studied since the earliest days — there has been a lot of genetic, developmental and educational analysis.’
But all that analysis has produced wildly conflicting results. This helps to explain why, only last month, a report by experts at Nanjing Medical University, China, in the journal Fertility and Sterility, concluded there is no difference in risk for babies between IVF and ICSI.
Their research amalgamated the results of 56 previous studies. So why the confusion? The sad fact is that research into assisted conception has become entangled in a mass of contradictory evidence.
The Chinese researchers began by looking at 925 clinical studies, but had to reject more than 850 of them. Some were badly run or poorly designed, and others were too small to provide a representative picture.
As a result, we end up with a confused, often scary picture.
For example, in January last year, a small survey of women pregnant via IVF who were seen at Yale University found their babies were up to 12 times more likely than normal to have congenital heart defects.

Other studies have flagged risks of heart disease in later life, as well as increased dangers of spina bifida and brain abnormalities.
Concerns over other forms of assisted conception have also been raised.

An unexpected finding of Professor Davies’s research was that the risk of birth defects among babies tripled in women who had used clomiphene citrate.
This is a drug that stimulates ovaries to produce eggs and is known by its generic name, Clomifene, or its brand name, Clomid.
‘While confined to a small group in our study, this is of concern because clomiphene citrate is widely available at low cost,’ said Davies.

BOXER PAUL WILLIAMS PARALYSED

Former two-time welterweight boxing champion Paul Williams has been paralyzed following a motorcycle accident in Atlanta.

His trainer and manager, George Peterson, who confirmed the accident took place on Sunday, May 27, 2012, says doctors have given Williams a grim prognosis.

‘They’re saying he won’t walk again or box again. Paul is in denial right now. It’s been that way with him. You tell him he can’t or won’t do something, and he wants to prove you different. So whatever the doctors say, he’s not listening. But they say that (walking and boxing) is not going to happen‘.

According to Peterson, Williams had ridden his motorcycle from his home to Atlanta to attend one of his brothers’ wedding. The accident occurred around 8am as Williams was riding to another brother’s home to get ready for the wedding, which was taking place later in the day.

Going by reports, Williams, who was wearing his helmet, rode out of his lane to avoid a car that was moving into his lane, but another car was coming toward him in the other direction.

Peterson said Williams swerved to avoid the oncoming car, wound up riding up a steep embankment and lost control of the motorcycle before flying several feet in the air and landing on his back.

The 30 year old is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, to stabilize the portion of his spinal cord that is intact and allow him to move his hands, arms, torso and head.

‘The other part of his spinal cord is damaged and has eliminated his lower body movement‘, said one of his doctors.

If Wednesday’s surgery goes well, Williams will remain hospitalized for a few weeks before moving to a rehabilitation centre.

Armed robbers attack passenger bus, rape girls

Two females in a bus conveying passengers from Lagos to Abuja were last Tuesday raped by armed robbers who attacked their bus at Sagamu area of Ogun State.

The gunmen also robbed all the passengers. PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred around 12noon.

It was gathered that the three-man gang armed robbers were among the passengers that boarded the bus at Jibowu area of Lagos.

But on getting to Sagamu, they brought out their guns, ordered the driver to stop and then diverted the bus.

The Station Manager, Ifesinachi Bus Transit, the operator of the vehicle, who identified himself simply as Nelson, confirmed the incident. He said the victims would be compensated.

He said, “Truly, the bus was robbed, and I immediately left to meet the victims when the report got to us.

“I addressed everybody, including the two girls that were raped. Some were given money to return home while others were advised to report at our Jibowu office for another bus to convey them to Abuja the next day.

“Some of them disagreed with the arrangement. I spoke to the two ladies that were raped in privacy and volunteered to take them to the hospital. One of them refused and the other who said she was 18-year-old accepted.

Nelson admitted that the passengers were not checked before they boarded the vehicle, saying he thought the style used by the robbers was no longer in vogue.

“We are sorry for not checking the passengers but you need to understand that nobody is perfect. There was also security arrangement we put in place but we stopped when we felt things had normalised. This was part of the reasons why we don’t operate night buses,” he said.

On the insinuation that the bus’ driver could have been the mastermind of the robbery, the station manager said all their workers were reliable.

Nelson said, “He parked at Somolu because of the limited space at our office. I could have called him but his phone and other valuables were also taken by the robbers.”

A final year pupil of the Nigeria Military School, Kaduna State, who was one of the victims, Feyisa Ayo-Vaughan, said the robbery took place few hours after they left Lagos.

He said, “We left Lagos around 8am. On getting to Sagamu, one of them brought out a pistol, pointed it at the driver and took over the steering and drove us into the bush. We were searched, robbed, and then the two girls were raped.”

The pupil, who lost his documents and money to the robbers, said the documents might affect his leaving the school in August.

Another victim of the robbery, who is also a pupil of the NMS, Silas Anure, said the attack was like a dream.

“They drove us into the bush and collected our money and even raped two girls. Two of the robbers slept with one girl, while the other two robbers slept with the second girl,” he claimed.

Group rates Jonathan administration low

An advocacy group, Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Group has described the one year administration of President Goodluck Jonathan as “disappointing and monumental fraud.”

The group explained that Jonathan’s policies in the last one year negatively affected the economy and worsened the living condition of Nigerians.

In a statement by the Chairman, Dayo Ogunlana and Secretary, Rasak Olokoba, COSEG urged the Federal Government to start being pro-active to stop the county’s degeneration.

The statement said, “When when you compare the living condition of Nigerians with their counterparts in West Africa, you will realise that this government in not working.

“The various revelations from the probe panels of the National Assembly are shameful; yet the government has refused to continue to pay lip service to the prosecution of those indicted.”

The group also insisted that most governors had not fulfill their electioneering promises, adding that they should utilize the remaining times to redeem themselves before those that elected them to offices.

COSEG advised that those who could not cope with the pressure of their office to resign rather than inflict more sufferings on Nigerians.

A-B-O-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N: Masquerade rapes undergraduate nursing mother

Tension mounts in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State as masquerades took turn in the series of rape stories synonymous with the community. The alleged rape of a female student, Ngozika Ugwu, presented mixed feelings and reactions to what may have bedevilled the community in the recent past.

Rape stories in Opi, a community in the university town of Nsukka, have occupied major national dailies, hitting banner headlines, from the three quarters that make up the community, Idi, Ogbozalla and Ibeku.

In 2011, the story of the rape of women between 70 and 80 years spread like wild fire in the country, raising eyebrows on the motive for such inhuman and barbaric act by, especially, youths of the community. Some of them were fingered and allegedly arrested, interrogated by the police but could not be persecuted because of want of evidence.

The masquerade
Following this development, Ada Enugu Women Organisation led by Mrs. Kate Ezeofor stormed the community for a church service at St. Charles Catholic Church parish, Opi to cleanse the land and the old women that were defiled.

Few months later, Opi women took to the streets in protest of yet another rape at Ogbozalla–Opi. The protest attracted the quick intervention of the Chairman, Nsukka Local Government Council, Mr. Tony Ugwu who invited all the stakeholders in the community to discuss the ugly development and proffer solutions. Though it was later discovered that the protest had political undertone, the council boss brokered peace to the satisfaction of all.

Barely few months of enjoying peace in the area, masquerades took turn in the series of rape stories in the community by defiling a 28-year-old undergraduate nursing mother. The victim told Crime Alert in tears that the trauma of the rape will forever live with her but stated that she had forgiven the rapists.

While narrating her ordeal, she appealed to local, state and federal governments to ensure that truth prevails in this country by fighting for the poor masses. Ngozi, who dropped out from her NCE programme at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical)due to lack of funds after her ordeal, called on concerned Nigerians to come to her aid to enable her go back to school.

She also hinted that the release of one of the suspects on the flimsy excuse that he was going to write his JAMB examination was not encouraging, attributing it to the fact that her family is poor and helpless.

Her story:
It happened on March 21, 2012. There were three masquerades that day but two were spotted and people started running. I was going to fetch water and as people were running, I equally ran and hid somewhere until the two masquerades passed. After the masquerades passed, I came out and continued with my journey. Soon, I heard a child saying that another masquerade was coming. I didn’t see the masquerade but people were running and I ran to enter into someone’s house.

The masquerade emerged from a corner (apiam way) and pushed me into the building where I was running to. I tried to escape but could not. It caught up with me and started beating me. What surprised me was that the masquerade said it has been looking for me for long and had now caught up with me. I sought to know what I did to deserve such treatment and at the same time pleading for forgiveness but it continued with its threat.

This time, it swore to take me to a bigger masquerade inside the forest, saying it has been long I had been insulting them. My cries for help and that I was a nursing a baby fell on deaf ears. As the masquerade was dragging me along, a man with wrapper came and pleaded with the masquerade to leave me but it refused, saying that I have insulted them for too long. It insisted on taking me to the bigger masquerade which will compel my clan to bring a cow as sacrifice.

All my pleadings with the man who came to my rescue failed. The masquerade dragged me to a bush path, threw me on the ground fell on me. It held me on the neck to prevent me from shouting and blocked both my eyes and nose. At this stage, I nearly lost consciousness until one man came and rescued me from its grip. He removed the face of the masquerade and that was how he was identified. As soon as he was identified, he ran away.

More people gathered there and helped to take me where I was given first aid treatment at a chemist before I was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Opi. I didn’t know when I was taken to the hospital. When I started gaining consciousness, I did not see my pant and my bra was torn. It was then I realised that the masquerade raped me. Fear gripped me that the masquerade may have transmitted HIV/AIDS into me.

Doctor’s report altered
We went to Nsukka police station and reported the incident. I was surprised that police did not come to the scene of the incident to investigate my claims. What the police did was to take me to a police doctor, Mercy Clinic along University Market Road, Nsukka. It is surprising that a doctor will give evidence against me in a case of rape I reported. Later, police invited me to their office for interrogation.

The victim, Ngozie Ugwu
When I tried to give details of what happened, they shouted that I should shut up and go straight to speak on the doctor’s findings on the case. Surprisingly, the Police asked me to write a letter of apology claiming that the doctor’s report said I was not raped. I did not read the report nor see it. I was forced to write an apology by the police.

While all these were happening, no police officer came to the hospital to take my statement. All the time, nurses would remove drips from my hand so that I would go to the police station to honour their invitation. The masquerade was allegedly arrested and hurriedly released on the flimsy excuse that he was going to write JAMB exams.

Pleas for forgiveness
While I was still recuperating, the mother of the suspected person in the masquerade came and pleaded that his son should be forgiven. I told his mother that I have forgiven him. What annoyed me most was that some of his relations which included a policeman that works in Enugu, returned home and instead of sympathizing with me, they took sides in favor of their brother. At a stage, I was forced to go to the police station to close the case.

No refund of expenditure
The police said that I should not be paid what my family spent in the case and that the family of the suspect should only pay for my hospital bill. The rapist family paid the hospital bill grudgingly. Later, the police invited us again and this time, they asked me to write that I was not raped and I was forced to write that I was not raped. The boy who raped me gave police his name as Asogwa Ifeanyi but people who knew him said, his real names are Ugwunshi Ifeanyi.

The police did not also make efforts to invite the witness in the case while the investigation was going on rather, after they concluded that I was not raped, they tried to invite him but he ignored them.

My Education
I dropped out from Enugu state college of education (Technical) due to lack of fund. I was a second year student when I dropped. I entered the tertiary institution in 2007/2008 session. For now, it is very difficult to continue with my education after all I have gone through. My father is a mason (Brick layer) at Uzo-Uwani L.G.A, Enugu State. We are five children born to my father and mother.

I am the only daughter.
Police reacts when Crime Alert visited Nsukka Police station, it was gathered that the incumbent Divisional police officer had not assumed office when the matter was incidented but a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity disclosed that a case of assault, occasioning harm was reported at the station but not rape as claimed by the lady stating that the people of the area are very troublesome. “Any small thing in the area, they will term it rape and rush to the press. You can trace the lady to Opi and find out from her, all that was reported is a case of assault occasioning harm.”

Police Doctor speaks
The police doctor, Dr. Ugwu who reportedly examined Ngozika told Crime Alert that he can’t remember such a matter any longer. “I meet different cases and patients on daily basis. Give me sometime to get across to the police to find out the very incident”.

Elders action
Investigations by Crime Alert revealed that the elders in the community, on hearing the rape story, took action by banning masquerades from operating in the area regretting that youths cashed on masquerade which are meant for entertainment to perpetuate all sorts of evil, painting the community in a bad public image. They also reportedly resolved that the family of the masquerade rapist must bring a cow to cleanse the land, or else they will be ostracized.

Former Liberian president faces sentencing for war crimes

The first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes since World War II will be sentenced Wednesday by an international court in The Hague, Netherlands.
Charles Taylor, president of Liberia from 1997 to 2003, was convicted last month of aiding rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in a campaign of terror, involving murder, rape, sexual slavery and the conscription children younger than 15.

There is no death penalty in international criminal law, and Taylor, 64, would serve out any sentence the Special Court for Sierra Leone hands down in a British prison.
The former Liberian president does not see himself as a war criminal but as a victim -- a leader wronged by corruption and a hypocritical hand of justice with a political agenda.
"I never stood a chance," he said. "Only time will tell how many other African heads of state will be destroyed."

In his final courtroom stand a week ago, when he addressed the world for the last time before facing his jail term, Taylor made a plea for why he should be spared the harshest sentence for his conviction on aiding and abetting war crimes.
He said he was saddened by last month's guilty verdict, in which the court said he had assisted Revolutionary United Front rebels who fueled Sierra Leone's long and bloody civil war that ultimately left 50,000 dead or missing.

Taylor, who expressed no remorse, insisted his intent was far from what had been portrayed by prosecutors and described himself as a peacemaker.
He blamed money for an unfair trial, claiming prosecutors received millions of dollars from the United States government and witnesses were paid off.

Last month's landmark ruling by the Special Court for Sierra Leone against Taylor was the first war crimes conviction of a former head of state by an international court since the Nuremberg trials after World War II that convicted Adm. Karl Doenitz, who became president of Germany briefly after Adolf Hitler's suicide.
Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was tried by an international tribunal, but he died before a judgment was issued.

Taylor, 64, was found guilty of all 11 counts of aiding and abetting the deadly rebel campaign in Sierra Leone and mining diamonds to pay for guns.
The prosecutors failed, however, to prove that Taylor assumed direct command over the rebels who committed the atrocities.
He was a pivotal figure in Liberian politics for decades and was forced out of office under international pressure in 2003. He fled to Nigeria, where border guards arrested him three years later as he was attempting to cross into Chad.

The United Nations and the Sierra Leone government jointly set up the special tribunal to try those who played the biggest role in the atrocities. The court was moved to Netherlands from Sierra Leone, where emotions over the civil war still run high.
Few are likely to agree with Taylor's call for a mild sentence. The judges' guilty verdict last month was unanimous and prosecutors have said Taylor deserves a stiff prison sentence to reflect the gravity of the crimes.

Brenda Hollis, chief prosecutor for the Special Court for Sierra Leone, has said an 80-year sentence would be appropriate.
"But for Charles Taylor's criminal conduct, thousands of people would not have had limbs amputated, would not have been raped, would not have been killed," Hollis said in a statement released earlier. "The recommended sentence provides fair and adequate response to the outrage these crimes caused in victims, their families and relatives."
Taylor will find out his fate at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time (9:00 a.m. GMT) when the special tribunal delivers its sentence.

Jonathan salutes heroes of democracy, says UNILAG is now Moshood Abiola University

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday morning paid tribute to the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, and other heroes and martyrs of democracy for serving as catalysts for the emergence of civilian government in 1999.
In a speech to the nation, Jonathan said they made huge sacrifices and ensured that military dictatorship became a thing of the past.
In honour of Abiola, he said, “The Federal Government has decided that late Chief MKO Abiola should be honoured. In honour of Chief MKO Abiola, the University of Lagos is renamed the Moshood Abiola University.”

Abiola died in the detention on July 7, 1998 a month after military despot, Gen. Sani Abacha, died in office. Abiola had been arrested on June 23, 1994 in Lagos and detained till he died for demanding the actualisation of the mandate given him by Nigerians in the June 12, 1993 presidential election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party.
The election described as the most credible in the history of the country was annulled by a former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, whose regime conducted the poll.
Abiola’s self-declaration as president based on the result of the election led to his incarceration and his eventual death.

By renaming UNILAG after Abiola, Jonathan has yielded to widespread clamour for the Federal Government to name a befitting monument after Abiola Jonathan.

In his speech, Jonathan said the decision to rename UNILAG after Abiola was borne out of his government’s desire to honour the politician, who he said paid the supreme price for democracy in the country. He added that an institute of democratic studies would also be established in the university.
Jonathan also disclosed his government’s plan to establish a presidential museum in Abuja.
The museum, he explained, would catalogue the lives of Nigeria’s former presidents since 1960.
He said Nigeria’s democratic experience in the last 13 years had been a mixed bag, giving the assurance, however, that the nation would not disintegrate.
“Nigeria is a nation of resilient people, Nigeria will never ever disintegrate,” he said.
He also vowed to eradicate violence from the nation’s electoral process and ensure the prosecution of persons indicted for acts of violence.
He said his administration would act on the recommendations of the White Paper of the report of the Sheikh Lemu committee on post-election violence.

Jonathan also said his “prayers and thoughts” were with the victims of various bomb blasts in the nation, noting, “We must take steps to heal the wounds of the past, strengthen our collective memory to take our country to greater heights.”
He vowed to confront the menace of terrorism, especially the threat posed by Boko Haram, adding that his administration would confront “all those who think they can derail us with violence perpetrated in churches, media houses.”

The President said the economy “grew by 7.2% in 2011,” expressing joy that Nigeria was receiving positive international ratings at a time that many other nations were being downgraded.
He stated that through its job creation programme, YouWin, his administration had provided opportunities for 1,200 youths.
He also said the nation’s four refineries had increased capacity utilisation from 30 per cent to 60 per cent.

He said the Public Works Women and Youth Empowerment Programme he inaugurated on February 13, 2012 would “370,000 youths in the year 2012 with 30% of those jobs being reserved for women.”
On agriculture, he said his administration would no longer provide continental dishes at state banquets, noting that only local menus would be served.

“Our policy to ensure rice self-sufficiency by 2015 is yielding fruit. In Kano, Nza rice mill has taken off and can hardly meet demand.
“For the first time ever, Nigeria will export one million metric tonnes of cassava to China, earning $136 million. Our goal is to add 20 million metric tonnes to our food supply by 2015. We must grow local and eat local,” Jonathan said.

He vowed to pursue the power reform programme and ensure the successful conclusion of the privatisation of the sector. Jonathan said his administration was moving forward steadily on cooperation with leading energy companies such as General Electric and Siemens, adding, “We are building about 4000 kilometers of transmission lines and new power plants.”

He further alleged that the defendant, among other things falsely wrote that he bought the said girl a jeep, that he was interfering in the academic activities of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, on behalf of the girl, that he used sexual performance enhancement drugs and that he had performed traditional marriage rites precedent to marriage between him and the said girl.

Oshiomhole, whose suit is before Justice (Mrs.) Efe Ikponmwonba, alleged that the said edition containing the libellous piece was widely circulated, to coincide with preparations for one of his daughter’s wedding.

He said, “When I called a brother governor to sponsor my daughter’s wedding, the governor said he was confused, and asked me if I was the one doing the marriage or my daughter.

Mysterious Snake Appears In A Lagos Bus

The discovery of a snake inside a moving commercial bus caused commotion and left commuters scampering for safety on Wednesday in Lagos, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Eyewitnesses told NAN that the Nissan Civilian bus, with registration number AJ 802 AKD, suddenly pulled to a halt on Apapa road on the Lagos Mainland, as frightened passengers rushed out for safety.

One of the bus passengers told NAN that she raised the alarm on sighting the snake which was aboard the bus heading for Okokomaiko, a Lagos suburb.

“I was sitting in the back and noticed something moving around my feet. I checked to look at what it was and I saw it was a snake,” said the female passenger who pleaded anonymity.

NAN reports that other passengers and passersby attempted to kill the snake but only succeeded in chopping off its tail before hiding itself in a compartment inside the bus.

All efforts aimed at removing the remainder of the snake from the bus compartment continued when NAN left the scene as both the bus driver and his conductor had abandoned the vehicle.

STAR TREK 2012: 2FACE, 9ICE, OBESERE ROCK IBADAN

Star Trek 2012, which kicked off last Friday in Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, at about 9:15PM, recorded a huge success.

The event, which began with a low turnout, ended with the crowd threatening to tear the venue apart, as thousands of youths trooped into the stadium for a glimpse of their favourite entertainers.

Here are some of the titbits from the concert, which had top members of staff of Nigerian Breweries PLC in attendance.

Between Gbenga Adeyinka 1st CFR and DJ Switch

As expected, the indigenous comedian, who has been tagged ‘Shine shine bobo’ for his continuous representation of the Star brand, was the anchor of the Star Trek 2012. He was at his best, and was able to perfect his choice of sounds with the help of star disc jockey, DJ Switch, who did a brilliant job.

Gbenga Adeyinka doles out 5k to dancers

Ibadan youths were blown away at about 10:22pm, when anchor, Gbenga Adeyinka doled out N5,000 to the best dancer of the night. This happened after he chose 7 different youths (male and female) from the crowd to show off their moves to the new dance steps, ‘Azonto’ and ‘Etighi.’ The winner, a young resident, couldn’t contain his joy when Adeyinka gave him the N5,000 for his dancing abilities after he was judged the best by the crowd.

‘Awaiting Stars’ Thrill Crowd

Awaiting stars’ are given the privilege to stage their acts at every Star Trek; and the culture continues this year. Several talented up comers were given the opportunity to gear up the crowd for the main acts. This went on till late in the night when the major performances began at about 11:30pm.

The Crystals Girls

One thing that those behind the stage kept talking about was the dancing prowess of the two female members of Crystals band. The two ladies danced all night, even after the band’s performance. They danced to every song that was played and entertained those behind the stage.

And 9ice Took Over the Stage

At about 1am, traditionally inclined Hip Hop act, 9ice, drove the crowd mad with tunes from his bestselling LPs. He sang for 45 minutes and delivered 7 different songs. His reign on the stage was heart-warming and fun filled, as the man who has been tagged ‘Bashorun Gaa’ by fans, was dubbed one of the 3 kings of the night.

2face Showed Class

Since it was announced that one of Africa’s most decorated and talented music acts, Innocent Ujah Idibia aka 2face would be leading entertainers in this year’s Star Trek, many have been expecting nothing short of sheer fun.

And when the well-travelled musician mounted the stage after 2am, the crowd went ballistic, as several fans rushed to get a good view of the newly wedded pop icon. He dished out several tunes to the delight of the crowd till he bowed out shortly after 3am.

‘No More Siring’ – Tuface

One of the high points of 2face’s performance was when he asked the beautiful ladies in the crowd to come out, but when they were not forthcoming, he reiterated that there would be ‘no more siring, for him as he had had enough. The joke was well received by the crowd.

Obesere Rocked Till the end

At 3:20am, self-acclaimed Paramount ruler of Fuji music, Obesere mounted the stage and sang his heart out to the delight of the crowd, who received him like the son of the soil that he is. He performed till after 4AM, when the event reached its crescendo.

Justin Bieber wanted for questioning after allegedly 'roughing up' a photographer during a date with Selena Gomez

Justin Bieber is wanted for questioning by Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators after a paparazzo complained of being roughed up by the pop star at a shopping center.
Sheriff's Lt. Robert Wiard says the photographer in question called 911 on Sunday and complained of pain to his chest.
Wiard said the scuffle happened when the photographer tried to snap pictures of Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez, after they walked out of a theater at The Commons at Calabasas today.

Wiard says the photographer was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.
He says Bieber and Gomez left before deputies arrived, so investigators want to talk to him to get his side of the story.
During the altercation, the Boyfriend singer appeared to grow angry at photographers snapping him and Selena.

He then appeared to lose his temper and was reportedly involved in the altercation.
TMZ claims that the paparazzo filed a police report, and alleges that according to law enforcement sources the police are investigating the incident as misdemeanour criminal battery.
While Justin failed to keep calm during the altercation, Selena made up for his shortcomings.

The 19-year-old was seen helping Justin retrieve his baseball cap and one of his high top trainers after they flew off during the incident.
She also appeared to be saying some soothing words to her beau as she chatted to him while tenderly stroking his arm to calm him down.
However the level-headed starlet did look a little concerned during the ordeal.
Meanwhile, Justin had a face like thunder as he put his shoe back on while being comforted by his girlfriend.
The pop star then walked away with his head in his hands seeming somewhat embarrassed at his behaviour.

No going back on review of electricity tariff - FG•Says June 1 take-off date stands •It’s unacceptable - NLC

THERE are strong indications that the proposed review of the electricity tariff will become effective on June 1 as planned despite strong opposition from labour unions.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) had last week opposed the proposed review by insisting that power generation must improve before the new tariff can become effective.

The Federal Government has insisted that the new tariff will take effect as planned in order to make the sector very competitive. The Minister for Power, Professor Bart Nnaji, stated that the country needs to do things differently in order to get different results. He stated this at a town hall meeting in Lagos at the weekend.

According to Nnaji, “we are reviewing electricity tariff in accordance with the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act 2005, which empowers NERC to review upward or downward as the case may be, to ensure that we have competitive tariff that will protect the interest of all stakeholders, both the consumers and the producers of power.

“The new tariff structure, effective June 1, will make the rural dwellers and the urban poor to pay lesser. They will be paying N4 per kilowatt as against N7 per kilowatt they are paying before. We are introducing cross subsidisation where the rich will be subsidising the poor, as being practised all over the world.”

A check by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that some Nigerians favoured the review of the tariff which, according to them, was not competitive at present, while others argued that the proposed review would have been embraced if it came at a time when power generation was improved.

According to a statement credited to Mr Sam Amadi, on the website of NERC: “when the first Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) prices were calculated in 2008, when MYTO was introduced, it was found that the cost-reflective tariffs were significantly higher than the non-cost-reflective tariffs that Nigerians had become used to.

The new tariff would cause what is known as price shock, which would have negative social and political consequences.”

A source within NERC, who preferred anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday that “March, April and May are not the ideal months to review the tariff, because of the drought season, in which water level is always low.

“At present, Shiroro hydro plant is shut down, due to lack of water supply, while Kainji power plant is producing below half capacity, due to drop in water supply.
“There is nothing anybody can do to this until July, when the wet season would have peaked. Reviewing the tariff is a necessity, but it is coming at a wrong time.”

Justifying the necessity of reviewing the electricity tariff, the source said “Nigerian tariff is not competitive; it is the cheapest in Africa and we all know that electricity is not cheap. Let’s us forget about the idea of getting everything cheap. If we want quality service, then we pay for it.

“Look at telecoms industry, competition has crashed the price when compared to what we used to pay when it came 10 years ago, but the service is improving day by day. If we don’t support the review, we will blame the minister of power for non-performance.”

However, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has said it was in support of the review, considering how much it spent on power generation.

According to the chairman, electronics and electrical sectoral group, MAN, Mr Reginald Odia, “MAN spends N72.6 billion annually on diesel to power its generating sets, while N120 million is being paid monthly as electricity bill.”

He argued that if the increase in tariff would result in improved power supply, it would boost the country’s economy.”

The national vice-president, Nigerian Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Alhaji Ahmad Rabi’u, said Nigerians would pay the new tariff if power supply was stable and sustainable.

“If we pay the proposed tariff, where will the money go? If you tell me where it will go, then I will encourage the hike and I will be encouraged to pay it,” he said.
June 1 date unacceptable —NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its opposition to moves by the Federal Government to increase energy tariff by June 1, saying at the weekend that the increase is unacceptable.

In a communiqué issued after its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting in Abuja, the congress said it would not welcome any increase in tariff when it had not been established that electricity supply had improved considerably.

However, the NLC commended the decision of the presidency to prosecute those found culpable in the probe on oil subsidy regime in the country by the House of Representatives.

President of NLC, Abdulwaheed Omar, who signed the communiqué, said the congress had resolved to oppose the electricity tariff increase.

Omar said “it also resolved to oppose any increase in energy tariff without improved power supply, while it calls on all affiliate unions to continue the demand for the holistic restructuring of the downstream petroleum sector, through building of the new refineries and self sufficiency in products supply.”

The NLC president also said the congress remained steadfast in the struggle for total implementation of the new minimum wage in all the states of the federation and called on the affiliates to remain steadfast.

“The assurance by President Goodluck Jonathan that there will be no sacred cows in the investigation and prosecution of the corruption in the downstream sector of the oil industry is laudable and deserves commendation,” he said.

Comrade Omar said Nigerians are eagerly looking forward to a thorough and diligent prosecution by the Attorney-General and the security agencies in order to disabuse the minds of the watching public and to ensure that the process is not a hollow ritual.

In Abeokuta, men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, arrested no fewer than five secondary schools students at M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, the venue of the Children’s Day Celebration, for being in possession of charms and intoxicated drinks.

The arrest came after Governor Ibikunle Amosun had warned students to shun any anti-social activities but to be upright in all their undertakings.

Amosun, while addressing the students, admonished them to begin the writing of their own history, so that their tomorrow could be asured.

He said: “As leaders of tomorrow, you must strive to be upright in all your undertakings. You should cultivate the virtues of discipline, decency, seriousness of purpose, focus, and respect for constituted authority and appreciation of dignity of labour.”

During the Children’s Day parade and rally at the Police College Parade Ground, GRA, Ikeja, the Lagos State Government announced the introduction of inclusive schools for the physically- challenged students in the state which is aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school-children and also giving them a sense of belonging.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola: “There are 31 of such inclusive schools carved out of existing schools in the state and children should be their brother’s keepers by helping the physically- challenged in their schools.”

Meantime, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, has flagged off the registration of compulsory free nursery/universal basic education for the 2012/13 school year.

Pointing out that the exercise will help reduce the number of OOSC in the state, SUBEB Board Secretary, Mrs. Titi Oluseye, said plans had been concluded to introduce the free mid-day meals so as to keep registered children in schools.

Terry G out with See Groove

For those of his fans who are wondering where the Akpako master has been all this while, worry no more, as he’s now out with a new single titled, See Groove.

Unlike the regular Terry’s style of hot and fast beats, he goes with a more hip-hop thing, a move capable of sending his fans asking for more.

As the title suggests, See Groove opens with a grooving beat accompanied with the sound of a jingled bell.

Terry then comes in with his usual ‘razz’- slangy lines while a background voice repeats the ‘nah nah nah’ rhyme.

“…baby girl show me that you’re beautiful…who get this big y*sh…oya baby wyn am o…oya ka lo tunle se…baby show me ur ginger style”, it goes on and on.

In all, it’s a club banger , produced by the Terry’s House of Ginger.

How adultery led woman to early grave

If Sekinat Emiola had known that an extra-marital affair she was was having with Asimiyu Ayantayo who lives at Oke Aremo Ibadan could lead to her death, she needed nobody to warn her to exercise some restraint.

She left her four children with a message that after she finished her business at Eleyele, she would have a stop over in the residence of Asimiyu before coming back home.

Unknown to her, she was saying the last farewell to her children. She never knew that all the dreams she had at the beginning of the year would crash like a pack of cards.

*Kausarat Sekinatu : Daughter of the victim
At Eleyele state police headquarters, all her former friends when she was alive could not stand by her. It was not that they hated her but it was because of the stench that was oozing out of her severed head and two hands. No thanks to her ‘lover’ who thought it was not necessary she lived so far he can have his way.

All sympathisers who thronged the police headquarters had to cover their nostrils so that they would not inhale the odour that had taken over the entire spacious premises. A policeman nearly betrayed his emotion when he saw the gory picture of the severed head of late Sekinat.

One of the children of the slain woman, Kausarat Sekinatu who had the guts to see the head of her once-loving mum was stunned to speechlessness with the horror before her. She never imagined that another mortal man could display such a level of wickedness. Unfortunately, all these could not revive her mother whose remains were packed into a bag.

The two suspects including a vulcanizer looked unperturbed. One of them who was said to be the prime suspect, perhaps, underestimated the evil he was alleged to have done as he was covering his nose and spitting intermittently as a result of the odour.

When asked how he committed the heinous act, the suspect confessed that Sekinat was his concubine and that they have been in a love affair for quite some time but he denied killing her. He said that on that fateful day, Sekinat came to visit him at Oke Aremo and they had sexual intercourse. But, after the intercourse, the woman died. “I knew that she had been laced with a killer charm popularly called Magun in Yorubaland and that any man who had sex with her would die.

I contacted magun on her during love-making. She wanted to summersault but I prevented her. Then, she started foaming after the act and fell down from the chair and died. I then decided to cut off her head and her two hands so that nobody would recognize her. I then sent this man to buy a nylon bag for me so that I could put the body there.

“At night, this man, Isiaka Akanbi helped me put sack on my head and we went and buried it at the cemetery. But the head and the two hands, I buried at the backyard of my house”.

The second suspect, Akanbi said, “He just sent for me and gave me N400 to buy a sack for him. He is a big brother in the neighbourhood. I went and returned with both the sack and N70 balance. I didn’t know what he wanted to do with the sack.

The following morning, he asked me to enter into a covenant. I asked him why we needed to go into a covenant and he said he wanted to show me the mystery of the world. I was surprised. He then asked me to drink the concoction he brought and I declined.

Then, he asked me to taste it with the tip of my tongue which I did. He asked me to follow him to his house and I did. After a brief conversation, he asked me to come and see something. When I saw it, I screamed! Then he said: “You are seeing the mystery of the world.

Make sure you tell nobody. Otherwise, you will die. I said that police must hear this and he said I would die. Then, he took me to the graveyard, dug a shallow grave and buried the parts. I knew the woman very well. I knew them as lovers.”

How the bubble burst.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that a boy living in the same house with the suspect heard the cry of that woman. In curiosity, he peeped through the keyhole of the door and saw the man using a cutlass to severe the head of the woman.

The boy went unnoticed. After, he was discussing with his mates that the suspect was heartless as he saw him cutting the head of the woman. Incidentally, a security man was standing close by and arrested the boy that he should lead him to where he saw the suspect. He was immediately arrested.

The daughter of the deceased, Kausara told Saturday Vanguard that she did not know the whereabouts of her mother. But, it was her brother that called her only to discover that their mum had been killed.

The brother of the deceased, Mutiu Emiola, a mechanic at Lagos called on the security agents to ensure that the life of the suspect was not spared.

He said, “On that day, my sister told one of her children that she was going to the market at Eleyele because she sells ewedu(vegetable) and that on her way she would detour to the house of Asimiyu. She did not come back home. And on that Thursday, Asimiyu told one of his children that he wanted to travel to Ijebu but did not disclose what he wanted to do there. We looked for my sister for two days not knowing she had been killed.

The police commissioner in the state, Mr. Tambari Mohammed, insisted that Ayantayo killed the deceased, but the suspect claimed that he beheaded her after she fell down from a chair and died.

But, to prove that he was hiding some facts, he gave another reason saying he killed her to save his own life because somebody has to die once magun is at work.

Whatever is done to the suspects for the murderous act, the bottom line is that Sekinat is dead and can never come back to life again.

American Idol Favourite Phillip Phillips to Undergo Kidney Surgery

Phillip Phillips is stepping up to take care of his health.
E! News has learned that the American Idol finalist will undergo kidney surgery in Georgia after completing publicity duties following tonight's season finale, addressing a pressing health concern that has plagued him throughout the season.

But what could this mean for the upcoming American Idol tour this summer?
Phillips, who is squaring off against Jessica Sanchez for the Idol crown, scored big at last night's show with his rowdy, rollicking rendition of Billy Joel 's "Movin' Out."
Win or lose, he is slated to do a press tour in New York City following tonight's season-capping results show, and will then return home to Georgia for the surgery.

E! News has exclusively confirmed that, depending on his recovery, he may miss one or two dates at the start of the American Idol tour this summer.
The soulful crooner, who suffers from kidney problems, was rushed to the hospital in early March after experiencing severe abdominal pains. His doctor has reportedly advised surgery, which he's so far put off to complete his run to the potential grand prize.

Cheryl Cole’s wardrobe malfunction at film premiere

Cheryl Cole came unstuck at a glitzy film premiere on Tuesday night when her stick-on bra came free and popped out of her dress.

The Geordie singer seemed oblivious to her wardrobe malfunction as she carried on smiling in her floor-length cream and white Victoria Beckham gown.

Cheryl, 28, takes on her first acting role in the film – appearing as a judge in a celebrity dance-off competition.

The former X Factor judge said: “This is a big night for me.

“It’s nice to bring the film back to my country. I’d love to be offered more acting.”

Cameron Diaz said of Cheryl: “She’s talented, and she’s so lovely and I think of course this is the beginning of many (films) for her.

“I’m sure she can do whatever she wants to.

“She really did us a huge favour by coming in and letting us sequester her for a couple of days and take her out to an old abandoned warehouse in Atlanta and make her act for us.”

The Girls Aloud star carried a Sergio Rossi bag and wore Giuseppe Zanotti shoes at the BFI Imax cinema premiere on London’s Southbank.

Pope appoints Martins to succeed Okogie

His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, on Friday appointed Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins as the new Archbishop of the Lagos Diocese.

He replaces His Eminence, Anthon Cardinal Anthony Okogie, who retired, having attained the canonical age of 75.

Pope Benedict XVI, however, appointed Okogie as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Lagos until the installation of the newly appointed archbishop.

Martins was born on June 1, 1959 and was ordained a priest on Sept. 18, 1983.

He was appointed Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese on Oct. 24, 1997 and ordained as bishop of the diocese on Jan. 24, 1998.

ONYEKA SHUNS COSON APPOINTMENT, CALLS ELECTIONS A COUP

Few weeks ago, Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu was appointed as a member of the newly inaugurated Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) advisory board. We’ve now been told the singer turned politician has openly rejected the appointment.

The veteran musician was appointed alongside with Sir Victor Uwaifo, Dan Maraya Jos, Onyeka Onwenu, Laolu Akins, Sunny Neji, Toju Ejueyitchie, Ben Ofoeze, Ossy Affason and Dayo Ogunyemi, at the second annual general meeting of the association held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Eko FM hall, Agidingbi, Lagos.

According to her, ‘I received with consternation the news that I have been appointed as a member of COSON Advisory Board. I was never contacted or informed by COSON directly until this appointment was announced on the pages of newspapers’.

She also added, ‘The idea of an Advisory Council is that of Tony Okoroji. He raised it at the last COSON General Meeting, right before the pre-determined election of a new board. It was not a decision of the old board and certainly not the new one which is made up of people who will rubber stamp his decision’.

‘Ordinarily, if properly canvassed with a sincere purpose, an Advisory Council for COSON would not be a bad idea’, Onyeka said, according to The Vanguard.

She continues ‘As it is, the move was made to ameliorate the impact of the coup, the schemes and shenanigans that characterised the last board elections; where people like Chief Ebenezer Obey, Laolu Akins, Toju Ejueyitchie, Charlimo, Sikiru Agbola and myself, all who are on the board as sticklers for due process, were schemed out by a well selected list of voters, most of whom had proxies. Well, we are not fooled, I hereby reject my appointment’, she concluded.
